While we had the hottest day so far yesterday and a really war - but clear - night as well, urs seems to have had bad luck with the festival:

even our local radio had it in the news this morning: heavy rains and (thunder) storms in parts of southern Germany, several thousand guests of a rock festival in Balingen became 'homeless', since their tents (on a camping place) were destroyed Crying or Very sad

That's what they say for Balingen today (right now, it's a bit foggy, but rather warm [21°C] and no rain)

http://www.bbc.co.uk//ouch/news/btn/flash_glastonbury.shtml

Also at Glastonbury, big festival, same weather, storms and then floods.
BBC do a big OB from Glastonbury every year.

That's in Somerset, SW England, by the way.

Here, cooler, dry today, rained yesterday after a week of glorious weather.

Wasn't only 'bad luck' in Balingen, but quite serious as later news confirmed:

40 persons were hurt. 250 persons from the Red Cross, Fire Brigade and the Technical Help Organisation were in action. Some hundreds got emergency accommodations in schools, gymns etc.

The Heavy-Metal-Festival «Bang Your Head» is said to be continued today - we certainly can listen to urs' life report later.

Walter, thanks!

Luckily, I was already home when the storm started. And BigDice just got a little wet on the way to one of his favourite bars :-)

The festival did continue on Saturday - a couple of hours later than planned. But everybody was having a great time. There was one heavy shower on Saturday afternoon but nobody really care since it was still so hot out. At the moment, it is 81 °F, blue skies and it will be hotter in the afternoon.

My parents-in-law are visiting. So I am not working today and tomorrow!

Today was a really hot day! Too hot for shopping - even though we went to Metzingen - Shopping Town Germany.

I would like to go to bed now. But it is soooo hot in the bedroom!

And it will be even hotter tomorrow - then thunderstorms on Wednesday when I will be back at work.

We just parked the car in the public garage so it will not be so hot tomorrow and met a neighbour who had parked his nice new English convertible. The poor car was drowned on Friday night in the big storm! The rain started so fast, he did not have time to close the top. It is WET!

Mild weather here in the Pacific NW, as usual, with a high of 65 and a low of 53... translating that to Celsius... 18 and 12. That's chilly enough to keep a a lightweight down comforter on the bed! It is supposed to get up to the mid-70's... ie. 24C by Wednesday. Good, since the Tall Ships are coming the day after that.

We had a lot of rain where we were yesterday (30 miles south in Olympia) and couldn't have a picnic outside as planned, but I bought two flats of raspberries today from a local Puyallup farmer who said that she had sunshine all day yesterday and just the hint of rain this morning to wash the berries. Yum. It makes them perfect!

Terrible about the flooding in Europe. I saw the photos of the Glastonbury tents. Shocking. Sorry to hear it was happening in Germany, too.

I didn't know they had tall ships on the west coast. How do they get them there? Are they (some of the) the same ships which call at european ports, and have they gone through the Panama Canal?
Do you know the names of some of the ships, Piffka, or have you got a web link for the event please?

We nearly took a sail on one (Sorlandet) from Leith, Edinburgh to Norway last year...tempted.

Ah, thank you, dear Walter.

I see the ships expected in Vancouver are not the ones usually operating in the Atlantic and nearer to here. I thought it would be a major operation to get them "round the corner".

I'm wondering now- should we go to Newcastle in July?

Weather here today- perfect summer weather, with some thunderstorms forecast for later....but that doesn't look likely at the moment.

Glad Walter is up on things... I'm not on a2k so much, McT and didn't see your request. I'm pretty sure some of these do come from around the horn... or at least through the P. Canal.

These Tall Ships have their own culture, I think. I am sad to say that I never got 'round to having my photo ID taken for a volunteer badge, so I'm not going to be working for TallShips-Tacoma. Just as well, I've got some film volunteer responsibilities this week -- our first outdoor film on Friday and I worked the Garden Tour last weekend. There's only so much one wee volunteer can do. We did move our boat to the waterway where the tall ships will be moored so we'll have a ringside seat. Our mast is stepped, but this looks something like the boat -- it's a fourteen foot, 4-oared, double-prowed wherry:

Here's another view of a similar boat except that ours has a pointed back end, not squared off as shown here.:

Pacific NW weather today... continued mild. It's 18C (65F) at noon with heavy clouds and intermittent sunbreaks. No rain. Should be a good day for raspberries to ripen and gardeners to do some chores.

That looks like an Orkney boat. a fourern. Very nice, Piffka- looks as though you can have a lot of fun sailing it. For the aesthetics of sailing, I prefer wood to plastic every time. Wood, canvas and hemp (rope!)

eastern lake ontario : another hot and muggy day - 31 C high, this morning at 6:45 a.m. it was already 23 C.
the weather office has already declared this june the hottest on record, and we've been told to expect more of the same !
glad we can cool off in the pool in the morning.
ontario hydro(energy company) is asking all customers to preserve energy - turn down air-conditioners or , even better , turn them off.
we spent most of the day sitting in thegarden in the shade - but i did a bit of gardening before noon. two minutes of rain this afternoon didn't cool things down.
ready to sing : "mad dogs and english-men ... ". hbg
