G-7 leaders pledge over 1 billion coronavirus vaccine doses for poorer nations

Quote:
The leaders of the world's seven richest nations agreed to donate 1 billion coronavirus vaccine doses to poorer countries over the next year and take a harder line against China, which President Joe Biden hailed Sunday as a return of American leadership on the world stage.

As the Group of Seven summit in the English town of Carbis Bay wrapped up, Biden told a news conference in nearby Newquay that the Covid-19 pandemic would be a "constant project for a long time."

There was a "clear consensus" among the other leaders that commitments they made to donate vaccines wouldn't be the end, he said, adding that the U.S. would be responsible for around half of the 1 billion doses or around 500 million.

This is a bit more hopeful. While the US is slowly recovering, the rest of the other countries are still seeing high case numbers. For example, only 5% of Peru's population is fully vaccinated. Also glad the US is no longer following the "America First" isolationist policies of the previous administration.

Sociopath Netanyahu is gone. And, no surprise, he's now behaving very much like Trump.

Aside from all the crap still going on, let's take a moment to celebrate that these two evil motherfuckers are gone.

@blatham,
Definitely reason for a bit of celebration, but I think “gone” overstates it a bit.

They have both been unseated from their positions of power, so they’re gone from there.

But Trump, and I suspect Netanyahu too will still be trying, and undoubtedly sometimes succeeding, to affect affairs of state.

And they will both unfortunately still be central to far too many news stories for far too long.

@blatham,
I suppose it would be futile to ask you to not be childish. Neither one of them is as evil as a typical progressive. If you want to see the nearest sociopath, go look into a mirror.

And both are well capable of returning to office. Mr. Netanyahu has left office before and managed to return.

That said, the new guy in Israel has some impressive ideas regarding what should be done to the Palestinians. We should give him a chance to crush the Palestinians under his heels and see how it turns out.

@snood,
You're right. Neither man will exit quietly or give up power easily. But both are now out of office and facing legal jeopardy.

If anyone is curious, his plan is to hand Gaza over to Egypt. Gazans will become Egyptian citizens and will be under the control of the Egyptian government. There will be no connection between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Gaza Palestinians will be forever separated from other Palestinians.

Refugees who fled Israel during the war and are waiting to return, will never return. They will not even be allowed to return to a Palestinian state in the West Bank, because there will never be such a state. They will have to learn to live in whatever country their refugee camp is in, because that is now where they will stay forever.

Israel will annex the West Bank. The Palestinians who are currently living in the West Bank will be granted local autonomy, but will never have sovereignty. They will remain under the strict control of the Israeli military and secret police.

@oralloy,
violates international law. Doesn't matter what state haas the political control. they will still be refugees from the lands the Israelis control and they will still have the right of return to those lands. if the israelis do that, they are guaranteeing there will never be peace and it'll be their own damn fault.

Not sure exactly what to make if it, since Bennett is reportedly as hard-right as Netanyahu (or even more). But Biden made his first phone call to Bennett just hours after Bennett took power in Israel. It was more than a month after Biden’s inauguration before he made his first call to Netanyahu.

Perhaps Biden is going to try to capitalize on the fact that Bennett has spoken of being less partisan than Netanyahu as regards US politics. Netanyahu made it his business - especially apparent during Trump- to deal almost exclusively with Republicans, and snub Democrats.

@snood,
Netanyahu headed up a right wing coalition.

Bennett’s support is across the spectrum.

It’s not just him.

But the proof of the pudding...

Yeah, they’re calling this administration Israel’s most diverse coalition ever. I guess we’ll see, like you said.

‘A war on 100 fronts’: mapping the anti-trans laws sweeping America
Quote:
In an extraordinary attack on trans rights, conservative state lawmakers proposed more than 110 anti-trans bills this year
[...]
The most common target: trans athletes
[...]
Other bills target gender-affirming healthcare
... ... ...

Sport is apparently a huge power factor in the USA, health anyway.

Not at all. Placing Gaza under Egyptian control will put an end to violence from Gaza. Egyptian forces will keep Gazans under tight control.

The Israeli military and secret police will keep West Bank Palestinians under tight control.

Refugees living in other countries will be managed by the security forces in those countries.

This plan has great potential to put an end to the threat of Palestinian violence once and for all.

The thing is, he will have an opportunity to showcase his ability as Israel's leader and will also be able to start consolidating his power.

This current coalition may not allow him to grind the Palestinians under the heals of his boots. But maybe after the next election he'll be in a stronger position and will have a free hand to give the Palestinians a proper thrashing.

The left has a nasty neonazi streak festering in their ideology right now. I imagine that such a thing might be off-putting to Israelis.

oppression didn't work to stamp out jewish claims to the land for three thousand years. jews and p;alestinians share the same DNA. won't work on the pals either. Your silution guaranbtees continuing intifadas. And egyptian governments are good at looking the other way. Not to mention the fact that the new israeli govt is a coalition of the entire apectrum from left to right. if they want to stay in power, and every politican does, they're going to have to take that into account.

@MontereyJack,
Egypt is never going to allow their citizens to fire missiles into other countries.

The current coalition is temporary. The new leader will have a chance to consolidate power and maybe after the next election will be able to rule directly.
