@CalamityJane,
I love old dogs, they're joyous.

@glitterbag,
Yes! Our Lilly has been joyous since day one though - shelter dogs are this way, they know....

@CalamityJane,
All of my dogs were shelter dogs, they are the best.

One friend of mine went and spent 3500.00 dollars on a French bulldog puppy, I would never buy from a breeder. You could save quite a few shelter dogs with 3500 bucks!

@jcboy,
You are so right! All of our dogs came from shelters too.
My neighbor paid a lot of money for a teacup size poodle and it turned out
to be a bigger mix of something, maybe 1/4 poodle. So unnecessary to pay big money to unethical backyard breeders.

Or in a prison. Several stories recently about a prison in Peru with dozens upon dozens of cats...including kittens. The prisoners house them, feed them, empty their kitty litter boxes...and have become more humane towards each other as a result.

I absolutely love how wonderful the pet lovers are on A2K. I remember a neighbor (years ago) shouting at me once because she caught me crying over a cat that just died. I discovered at that time she was a massive asshole (I was never very fond of her) but on occasion I get a chance to torment her (and I do). Not trying to become a saint, but who in the hell thinks it's ok to mock a grieving person. At least she doesn't try it anymore with me.

Most of my dogs came from shelters. But two were different. My sister and her kids visited when I lived in Rockport. One of the kids was harassing a little dog and it took refuge in my chair. My sister happened by and said, "Do you want that dog." Sure I did. It was love at first sight. I named her Pearly Mae because I like Pearl Baily.

The other dog showed up at my porch one afternoon. A lost little puppy getting harrassed by the cat. Her yipping alerted me. I brought Holly inside and I told the family, I'm not sure what we've got, but I'm keeping her."

Both dogs were amazing, as are most dogs, given the chance.
