Sorry, cj. That really does suck. And Intrepid, I too always thought you were a puppy until I read about your 8th grandchild yesterday - congrats to you on that. I hope you both find something suitable soon.
Intrepid has eight grandchildren??? Eeeyikes!!!!!! Thirty-nine years in the same company????
<thud>
I thought you were in college, Intrepid. You seemed so carefree!
It's crummy stuff going down for employees; a cold cruel world out there. (Or damp and dingy... as Montana said.)
Maybe I need to go into business for myself. Raise alpacas or something.

I hope that carefree does not translate to young and foolish
I started in the company at a young age
<edit> - no offence to those in college. I just realized that it could be taken other than in the spirit that it was written
No-no... nothing negative. Just happy & spirited & full of life. I admired it and wished I had some of that for myself.
When a door closes, a window opens. I agree that this is an opportunity for you.
It sucks but everything will work out. Promise.
So, what should I do now?
Man sorry to hear this news - better look at my stock position.
Lots of people from CA are still moving up hear - sell your home for half to 3qtr mil. the some up move here and buy half a castle for $250k bank the balance for adjusting to lower wages, happens alot.
One thought if you decide to cashout look at the tax situation, more or less deductions on the payout - you might want to make a change in your withholdings before then.
Don't panic, cj. Checkout the offer of a parallel position. If it sounds tolerable, take it but keep your eyes open for other opportunities. Start reaching out to folks you might have worked with before but who have moved on to other companies. They may know of openings and would be able to recommend you.
I misrepresented the cashout. The rules have changed, so it's about 1/5 of that. My (double) bad.
I don't own a home in CA, we rent - never could quite break into the market, at least not anything we actually wanted to buy. So perhaps it's a blessing in that maybe it will force us to move. I like it here, and I don't like it here. The weather is nice though.
Too hot today. Whew, 90+. Not good for frayed nerves.
I wish you the very best in whatever you do, CJ ;-)
Not good, cjhsa!
The best of good luck in finding another suitable position.

Whatever you want! Your options are unlimited.
Well, I have been offered another job, unfortunately, it is in another state far, far away, for less money. This would be a huge move/uprooting of my family to a job that pays less than 70% of what I was making. At least they will cover the move. But it's the only thing I have right now and I'm the head of household. It's a new industry for me too. I've done aerospace, telecommunications, and now...power transmission?
Any advice?
Grab it. That's a 30% cut, right? You're going to drop into a lower tax bracket, so it won't hurt as much as expected. Just maybe a lower cost of living, and who knows, maybe a shorter commute.
And thanks. That's the first good news I've heard today.
Sounds energizing to me, even though a big transition.
