Yes an the federal government function smoothly during that war even a contested Presidential election in the middle of it.

After the war there was no mass hangings and such either.

Don't you know Twain and his writing are considered racist? That means he is guilty of "wrong think" and should not be heeded. You won't find Twain in our schools, which is very sad.

@farmerman,
What about the troubles?

It wasn’t a battle.

Do you think anyone in England really wants to be associated with ******* Ulster?

The Irish can have it.

Why don’t you try telling the ******* Unionists they’ve got to be part of a United Ireland.

What about Palestine? Northern Ireland had a peace process, Palestine is American sponsored apartheid used as a testing ground for the American military complex.

Sorry most historians will agree with my statements now as far as Mark Twain is concern he was never a historian nor was the lynching of poor blacks have anything to do with the Federal government being a stable government or not.

Stable does not mean perfect or even fair.

Merry England for example drove a super genius that help win WW2 to suicide due to him being gay that does not mean your nation did not have a stable government for that time period at least.

@BillRM,
“Merry England” didn’t have anything to do with the extermination of Vietnamese women and children, or a coup in Chile installing a fascist regime, not to mention Salvador, Honduras, funding of murderous drugs cartels in Mexico.

@BillRM,
Oh I get it you are claiming that not hanging rebels after a major civil war that killed many hundreds of thousands that almost all other nations would had done is connected to blacks being hung in some manner.

In the Spanish America war a former southern general given command of US troops got carry away an order his men to chase the damn yankees down not the Spanish soldiers.

My my I got to get my books of Kipling out where he went over all the murders / killings done in the world wide conflicts of the Brit empire.

I maybe in error but I think that Churchill as a young man also wrote how women and children and old local people was chain to the sides of railroad engines and cars to keep the trains from being attack.

An that matter how if it long enough in the past that most people who took part in such deeds in the name of a nation is dead it no longer matter?

England like most powerful nations have done actions to be ashamed of. Now that England is no longer an international power it crimes are going into the past but that does not mean that England is any more moral then the US.

My my was not torture legal under UK laws when England was fighting the IRA???? Not all that long ago and well within the life span of most of us.

Quote:
DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland has accused Britain of torturing 14 Irish Republican Army suspects in 1971 and formally petitioned the European Court of Human Rights to review its original findings on the case, reopening one of the biggest legal disputes from the Northern Ireland conflict.

Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan said Ireland sought to reopen the case with reluctance, given its close relations with Britain today. But he argued Tuesday that a trove of newly uncovered documents in London indicated that Britain withheld important evidence from 1970s court proceedings that, if considered now, would overturn the court’s 1978 ruling.

That landmark judgment ruled that British security forces in 1971 employed interrogation techniques against the 14 men which were “inhuman and degrading” but fell short of meeting legal definitions of torture. The United States cited that judgment as part of its legal defense a decade ago of various aggressive interrogation practices, including waterboarding, of al-Qaida suspects in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

A British government inquiry in 1972 found that the 14 suspects — dubbed the “hooded men” because their heads were kept covered for days in custody — had been targeted by experimental sensory deprivation techniques intended to disorient the men and break their will to resist questioning about IRA activities. They were denied sleep, food and drink, exposed to continuous white noise, and forced for protracted periods to stand spread-eagled against a wall.

The newly uncovered government records, obtained by Irish documentary makers and used in a June broadcast, suggest that Cabinet-level British government officials authorized the interrogation methods and were concerned that the practices might constitute torture. These documents were not disclosed to the European court.

“On the basis of the new material uncovered, it will be contended that the ill treatment suffered by the hooded men should be recognized as torture,” Flanagan said.

The Strasbourg, France-based court could take months to respond to Ireland’s request. Britain offered no immediate reaction.

Amnesty International, which lobbied Ireland to file an appeal before a Dec. 4 legal deadline, welcomed the move.

@BillRM,
Holy Christ, will you give it a rest? In less than 4 years Trump has managed to empower the imbeciles and the stupids and the greedy selfishness of assholes refusing to wear masks.....Now the rest of the World looks at us with pity and sometimes disgust. We better get out act together and stop playing "holier than thou" because Trump has **** all over decency, honesty, respect and true love of country because he is easily bored and he craves gargantuan amounts of attention. It time to get our country back in the game, if we don't put our foot down now, Trump is going to drive us off the cliff.

And you are not with them? Your posts show disgust but not pity. Your hate for your fellow Americans is crystal clear. And you have no pity. The ones who opine about empathy do not care who gets hurt, burnt down or destroyed and have no problem with domestic terrorism for political change.

You are simply not an American anymore, if you ever where.

In other news...

It’s a quintessential example of spinning. Representatives of Trump are saying that the reasons for the tiny crowd in Oshkosh yesterday was that it was “by invitation only”.

Sure, we all believe that the Trump campaign limited the scope of their advertising about the rallies Trump staged to counter the DNC Convention, but why?

Was it, as they are contending, that they only wanted to speak to a small crowd? Pish posh. We all know this poison-ego sociopath wants “yuge”, screaming, adoring masses.

Or was it for two very obvious reasons?
1) Even the Trumpnuts respect the possibility of being infected with coronavirus.

2) and this is the one they really don’t want to acknowledge or talk about:

The enthusiasm for 4 more years of this cretin driving us blindly off a cliff has significantly waned - even among his goofball deplorable base.

Check out the polls in Wisconsin - a critical state for the ****-stain in Chief.

I feel deep deep shame over having Trump as our president in fact it is my opinion that if we would pick at random a homeless person near the white house to be President we have a good chance at getting a better President then Trump.

That said I still find it somewhat annoying when Izz post his attacks on the US for having the faults of all nations that are great powers such as at least at one time the very nation he is posting from.

Footnote I have one hell of a high opinion of the UK even if it the birth place of Izz.

I was attacking your grandiose bollocks. Why do you think no other smart American is backing you?

It’s because you’re a bloody idiot who invariably ends up damaging the cause you claim to support.

My my so far two votes down for posting that I do not love Trump or Izzy!!!!!!!

Crazy but interesting place this surely is.

Maybe we will go in a saner direction once Trump is out of office and sitting in state and or Federal court rooms.

Oh footnote for Izzy the man who lead your nation during WW2 was half American and given an honorary American citizenship by vote of congress.

Quote:
And by the President of the United States of America a Proclamation:

WHEREAS Sir Winston Churchill, a son of America though a subject of Britain, has been throughout his life a firm and steadfast friend of the American people and the American nation; and

WHEREAS he has freely offered his hand and his faith in days of adversity as well as triumph; and

WHEREAS his bravery, charity and valor, both in war and in peace, have been a flame of inspiration in freedom's darkest hour; and

WHEREAS his life has shown that no adversary can overcome, and no fear can deter, free men in the defense of their freedom; and

WHEREAS he has expressed with unsurpassed power and splendor the aspirations of peoples everywhere for dignity and freedom; and

WHEREAS he has by his art as an historian and his judgment as a statesman made the past the servant of the future;

Now, THEREFORE, I, JOHN. F. KENNEDY, President of the United States of America, under the authority contained in an Act of the 88th Congress, do hereby declare Sir Winston Churchill an honorary citizen of the United States of America.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

DONE at the City of Washington this ninth day of April, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and eighty-seventh.
