From one job-hunter to another: You have my sympathy. Congratulations for applying, and, good luck making the kill! I'd also tell you to hold your dominion, but this sentence is copyrighted.

You better don't -- or else you'll offend the HR people reading it.

Lol!!!

Yeah.......it was a line call on whether I went for this one or not....I am really ambivalent, hence the crappy last minute application.........I end up kicking myself when I do that (I did the same thing for the job I am in now) because I think I make an idiot of myself.

I nearly DID let go a couple of times.....

You're right about the dominion thing....you use that phrase, and you won't be able to hold a dominion for a month.

How's your hunt going?

But possibly.

When I was a young man
I carried a pack and lived
the free life of a rover
From the murrays green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my matilda all over
Then in nineteen 85 my lover said son
It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done.

(With Apologies to the Pogues)

I can NOT believe the price of real estate In that area! Jaw droppingly expensive for a place thats a 3 hour plane flight from Perth and Half way between Darwin and Broome

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry deb, I dragged your thread around to talking about me self (as per usual). Under the heading of Personal skills/abilities it says 'Possess a sense of humour'

Does rapier sharp, internationaly honed and sarcastic sense of humour work for you?

Because they are more serious minded and hardworking people than I.

I just use a mantra:

You know, like Bart at the beginning of every episode:

"I must not say social work theory is a heap of useless **** when it comes to therapy, and probably generally"

"I must write SOMETHING in every gap"

Mind you, I was tired.

Just discovered this thread, Deb.
You're applying for another job? (Trying to figure this out from a quick read of the last couple of pages.) To save you going over the same ground again, a simple yes or no to my question is perfectly OK!

Another job from the one I got two years ago?

Yes.

Another job from the one I started talking about a couple of pages ago?

No.

That's short in my field, at this level.

Cursory.

Slapdash.

That's IT?

Mine could be just as brief, there has just been this thing where they break the damn things into micro tasks, and you have to demonstrate how you meet every single one.

It's insane.

To be fair, when you are selecting, you really just read the essentials list, and chuck anyone who hasn't got 'em all.........unless you don't get any who meet 'em all.......(when you either re advertise, or see if there's anyone pretty close, who might be good anyway)...then you get a bit of an idea where people are in the more esoteric ones.......but interview all who meet the essentials, unless there's a million.

You then select based on interview + whatever people have over and above essentials.

And attempt to get a good idea about them from referees.

Sounds an incredibly laborious & tedious process. I guess you wouldn't be applying for jobs all that often, if this is what they expect? How much does word of mouth, from the professional grapevine in your field, count?

Missed out on a pretty good job. Searching employer websites for new prey to stalk. I'll get there eventually.

Practical question: is your cover letter really supposed to address job offer lyrics like: "dynamic initiative-taker, innovative thinker, excellent commuication skills required ..." (a tough requirement because in real life, I usually communicate by drumming my fists on my chests while howling.) Until now, I discretely ignored language like this as content-free semantic noise. Was that a mistake? Would it have been a mistake for you to ignore most of the noise on your 20 pages?
