Did NYC dig mass graves for the thousands of deaths including children from the flu?

Not that I know of. But what they face right now is far worse than a bad flu season.

@BillRM,
Tell that to the health workers working day and night to save lives in Italy.

Not only there and not only to them but to all involved.

@Walter Hinteler,
Indeed. New York City yesterday recorded more than 1000 victims, i.e. surpassing the entire country of Italy (Italy peaked at 1000 daily recorded victims a few days ago, and has been around 800 per day since) but with a total population in NYC that's only about 1/5th of the population of Italy... One day doesn't a pattern make but if these numbers hold up, it looks like the US epidemic will be far worse than anything seen in Italy.

@Olivier5,
Sorry, i got my numbers wrong: there was not 1000 deaths in NYC in one day, but cumulatively, since the start of the epidemic, NYC reached 1000 deaths yesterday. Apologies for the error.

@Olivier5,
Of the well over 200,000 Germans stranded abroad because of the Corona crisis, 187,000 are back in the country, all of them with flights (about 180)
organised by the Foreign Office.
But about 10,000 Germans are still stuck there, according to the Foreign Office while the news agency dpa reported that 12,000 people were affected.
According to the Foreign Office, there are also still 7000 German travellers in South Africa, 5000 in Australia, 4000 in Thailand, 2700 in India and 2000 in Peru. So far, return flights to 45 countries had been organised.

In contrast to the beginning, the recall operations are now also coordinated at European level, with flights being registered in Brussels, a spokeswoman for the Federal Foreign Office explained last week. Almost every flight would also be able to accommodate other EU citizens. Conversely, Germans would also be flown back from the Caribbean on French flights, for example. In addition, South Africans, for example, had been taken back home in planes which would then bring German tourists back home.

So what as in the number of deaths in that large of a population with or without the virus is nothing special.

@BillRM,
I am curious. How many deaths is "special"?

The coronavirus is now killing over 500 people are dying a day in New York. Do you really think this happens with the normal flu?

Go to the cdc website as last year flu as it is all there and a so call normal flu season can match coronavirus death totals.

Quote:

http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2019/04/us-flu-still-elevated-dropping-deaths-high-57000

Still, the agency says influenza has caused up to 57,300 deaths and sickened up to 41.3 million people, according to new estimates. And the CDC reported five new flu-related deaths in children, raising the total confirmed this season to 91.

Season length and impact
The 21 straight weeks of elevated outpatient ILI activity is more than any of the past five seasons, including last year, which was particularly severe. From 2013-14 to 2017-18, above-baseline ILI activity stretched for 11 to 20 weeks (in 2014-15), with an average of 16 weeks.

The proportion of outpatient visits for ILI last week was 2.4%, down from 2.8% the week before but still above the baseline of 2.2% Seven of 10 US regions reported ILI at or above their region-specific baselines.

In its latest estimates on flu impact today, the CDC said the disease has sickened from 36 million to 41.3 million people this season through Apr 13, of whom 16.7 million to 19.4 million sought medical care. In addition, the disease has hospitalized 502,000 to 610,000 patients and killed 34,400 to 57,300.

The CDC bases its estimates on its weekly FluView surveillance reports, which summarize key flu activity indicators. The agency has not previously provided in-season estimates.

This thing will kill 2 millions Americans this year alone if you don't take it seriously.

@engineer,
I toured the Theodore Roosevelt sometime back in 87-88 with 11 other managers from our Division. I was thunderstruck how large it is, the size of the links in the anchor chain are intimidating. (I guess it's still called a chain, its immense...should have a grander name than chain).....

It's not a warm and fuzzy place, I hope they manage to move the sailors quickly.

@Olivier5,
I guess Bill likes to think of the big picture, you know, people dying from a contagious disease is no big deal unless it happens to him.

@Olivier5,
Spain has recorded a new record number of deaths from coronavirus. Within 24 hours, 950 people died, the Ministry of Health announced. Previously, the country had suffered more than 800 deaths for five days in a row, but there have never been more than 900 victims. This means that a total of about 10,000 people have already died of Covid-19 in Spain. At the same time, the number of patients cured also climbed to a record level: since Wednesday, almost 4100 people have been discharged as healthy.

@BillRM,
Given that the flu is less contagious and people get immunized for it, would you accept that 100 million cases is reasonable for covid19 if the flu does 41 million?

The fatality rate is over 1% (sometimes 3-4%) in just about every state that has over 1000 cases (NC is just under) so a 1% fatality rate seems conservative to me. Do you agree?

1% of 100 million is 1 million deaths. Just 1% of the flu exposure is over 400K deaths.
