Several European countries (a few cases with the new variant have been detected in Iceland, Denmark and the Netherlands) and Australia have detected the new, faster-spreading strain of COVID-19.

In South Africa, authorities believe that a new strain detected there is not the same as the one in the UK.

Just learned that one of my past partners died of coronavirus while he and his family were aat their vacation home in New Mexico .His wife was stricken but is doing well. After all this time, I knew noone who was infected. Now its o close to my heart.

My friend and partner was always criticizing how masks actually caue covid. He and his wife went maskless mostly so they had to do most all thei shopping over the phone.

I shall miss him, he was a bright detail oriented guy. Hell of a sense of humor straight from his Sikh upbringing.

In fairness I think the term means those additional deaths caused by the pandemic. If you take the amount of people who died between April and June this year and compared it to the same amount who died between April and June in 2019 when there was no pandemic the difference would be the excess deaths.

In reality it's quite crude, there may be a host of other factors coming into play like a natural disaster, a mass shooting or any other event that could skew the data.

The mutation of the coronavirus in Great Britain has spread around the world.
In Germany, a case with the variant called B.1.1.7 already occurred in November. Most recently, the mutation was detected for the first time in Chile, also in Colorado. There, the mutated virus type appeared in a young man who had reportedly not even travelled recently.

Experts had suspected that B.1.1.7 spreads faster than the previously known virus lines. But until now, little was known about how dangerous the mutation is.
Now, researchers from Great Britain give at least a slight all-clear.
According to a recent study by Public Health England, called "Variant of Concern 202012/01" by the researchers, B.1.1.7, does not cause more severe illnesses than other variants.

For the study, the researchers compared 1769 people infected with the new variant with 1769 people who had the so-called wild type - a total of 3538 cases. The two groups were matched on the basis of age, sex, place of residence and time of testing.
