Well, a French "droguerie", a German "Drogerie", a Spanish droguería ... aren't pharmacies but "drug stores".
Pretty simple when using the original meaning of words.

They also do not use the English language Walter. Any Englishman can come to America and ask for a chemist or pharmacy or apothecary and 99% will know they want a drug store just like an American can go England and ask for a drug store and 99% of Englishmen will stick their nose in the air and go on for 30 minutes about what a drug store is called in England.

Oh wait, no, that's just Izzy. Most will know what the American means.

Well, I've learnt that I can buy cigarettes in an US drugstore. (Did so in various states.)

My point, however, was more about the original meaning of "drug" - that's just "dry", and a Dutch "droguerij" (that's the first known word for 'drug store') was selling dried herbs as did the German "Drogerie".
