Like a miracle it will just go away. remember when that imbecile in the white house said that just a few months ago, now closing in on 128K deaths in this country. Personally I believe that number is much higher, but we will never know.

@McGentrix,
Because those countries aren't our benchmarks. We should try for a higher standard.

@engineer,
That's useful. Numbers without considering population are not.

Australia had 81 new cases in 24 hours, and it's almost being considered a national emergency. The US had over 50 000, and Trump hopes it will "go away". **** you're in trouble!

Young people are throwing coronavirus parties with a payout when one gets infected, official says

Some young people in Alabama are throwing Covid-19 parties, a disturbing competition where people who have coronavirus attend and the first person to get infected receives a payout, local officials said.

The parties are being held in Tuscaloosa, and infected people are urged to attend so others can intentionally contract the virus, City Council member Sonya McKinstry told CNN. She said she heard about the trend from fire officials.

"We thought that was kind of a rumor[sic] at first. We did some research, not only do the doctors' offices confirm it, but the state confirmed they also had the same information," she said.

Story on face masks

Quote:
As the coronavirus pandemic surged across Europe, so did the use of face masks as a means to prevent the virus’s spread.

In Spain, public authorities have distributed millions of masks to commuters on public transportation. They are now commonplace in Germany, as well, available in local shops and vending machines in Berlin. In France, which made masks mandatory in schools, shops, and on public transportation in May, President Emmanuel Macron has drawn plaudits for showing that wearing a mask doesn’t mean sacrificing style in the name of public health.

All of this has been fairly uncontroversial. Face mask usage in France has jumped to 79%, according to a June YouGov poll, while in Spain it’s as high as 86%, and in Italy it’s 85%.

Not so in the United States, however, where face masks have starred at the center of a partisan and highly charged culture war.

We Europeans only wonder:
'We don't live in a communist country!': battle over masks rages in Texas
Quote:
Coronavirus cases are rising, but despite the exhortations of health experts, many Texans just don’t want to wear a mask

The driver license mega center in Fort Wortha closed abruptly, just minutes before 1pm on Tuesday. Staff removed the two tables outside the entrance that recorded all visitors’ contact information, health histories and performed temperature checks.

Since reopening on 3 June, the facility had spaced seats inside to meet social distancing guidelines, cleaned surfaces regularly, and only served those who booked appointments online. All workers wore masks, and anybody allowed in was required to wear a face covering. But despite the precautions, a Covid-19 case had been reported there.

One of the people turned away was Laurie Smith, 50. She is an administrative employee at a local church, where she is also a member, and calls mandatory mask requirements a sign of “sad” government manipulation. “My college-age kids are able to follow the recommendations without questioning it, but my husband and I are of a different generation, and we value our liberty to be able to make our own choices. So we question it more than they do,” she said.

Her daughter shook her head silently in the passenger seat but did not say anything. Neither of them wore a mask.

The science of wearing masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus seems to be largely settled, but the politics around it is still raging, especially in conservative strongholds like Texas. Stores, churches, small businesses, government offices and other institutions across the state are grappling with how to enforce public health rules without alienating those who disagree.

Mask-wearing soon turned into a partisan squabble between lovers of liberty who hate government mandates and supporters worried about getting sick or infecting others. The consequences of the deep divisions are starting to appear as coronavirus cases surge in Texas, but a mask remains a public health, political and religious statement.

Covid-19 hospitalizations across the state have more than tripled since the beginning of the month, and hit an all-time daily record of 8,076 cases on Wednesday. according to the state health department.. Greg Abbott has refused to order a statewide requirement to wear masks to protect individuals’ liberty and avoid alienating his core base, but has pleaded with citizens to do so anyway.

Statewide, a patchwork of local regulations, loosely enforced, have sprung up. Nine mayors unsuccessfully petitioned for power to make masks compulsory. The governor’s own health commissioner is recommending masks. Dr John Hellerstedt said: “This is the biggest Covid-19 challenge that Texas has faced since coronavirus hit our state. Every single Texan must be part of the solution and must join in the battle to reserve these trends.”

The vacuum left between the two sides is becoming a tinderbox.

“We don’t live in a communist country! This is supposed to be America,” said Tee Allen Parker, who has banned wearing of masks at her bar.

The 45-year-old owner of the Machine Shed Bar & Grill in Kilgore, east Texas, has become the face of the resistance fighting mask-wearing among the business community in the state.

She said: “It’s an individual choice. There’s been nothing scientific that says masks are effective. I choose not to wear it, but I don’t let thousands of people breathe on me.”

@Walter Hinteler,
I am all for Trump and Trump supporters not wearing masks if it was not for all the sane people an children they are aiding the spread of the disease to.

There still is some small comfort that the Trump supporters are are doing their duty of increasing the intelligence average of society by removing a large percent of themselves.

Now let see if there is a god with a sense of humor that would call Trump back to hell by way of the virus.

@BillRM,
It’s not just Trump and his supporters who are affected.

It’s like the vaccination debate and herd immunity. Some people are too sick to be vaccinated and rely on herd immunity for protection. They’re the ones most as risk from these anti van idiots.

The grey seals on the German North Sea coast reproduce magnificently. In Lower Saxony, in Schleswig-Holstein and on the island of Helgoland, the population increased by up to 40 percent, according to the Wadden Sea Secretariat in Wilhelmshaven CWSS (Common Wadden Sea Secretariat).

A total of 7649 grey seals have been counted off the coasts of Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. This means that the population has more than tripled since the start of the censuses in 2008, it was reported. The largest colonies are found in the Netherlands, followed by Lower Saxony and Heligoland. In Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark fewer animals were observed. Grey seals "commute" between the Wadden Sea and British waters.

Experts suspect that the seals benefited this spring from the decrease in human activity due to the pandemic measures.

@BillRM,
remember Bill. The masks protect others, mostly. The wearer is protecting others. So, not wering a mask iis harming those who associate with maskless Donny.
I see that Pence is doing a total 180 and is sorta ignoring Trump, (WHO I FEEL HAS GIVEN UP TOTALLY) and pence has slowly become an avocate for distancing and masking.
How many more lives before the idea puts a dent into these non-mask idiots?

The Moron President has at least , relinquished any control or interest on the subject. His "war" has ended in a Chamberlain -like pact with the diesease.
Others, less afflicted with ADHD and low IQ's will have to clean up after his deadly pile of crap.

@BillRM,
There is a flag code, which is CFR not in the Constitution.

Im not sure but Ill hve to look up whether the disrespect displayed by flying the flag upside down (WHEN NOT IN DANGER) may be a misdemeanor or a low grade felony. (Im never certain about it , thats why Ive put it out there)
