Very Happy I'd love to turn this thread into something really serious with a classic picture sent to me by an old Buddy. It's called breast appreciation day but I don't want to be banned by the "thought police"!

As a college professor, I know that there are many conservative profs.

I also know, because I am able to read and reason, that you are calling for censorship and probably have a deep seated fear of the free flow of opinion, unless it is yours.

I have made no secret of the fact that I teach at the university level and that I had a career in public school teaching. I think I even said what my main subject area is.

Atkins, I would not be too worried. Rayban was indulging in a fantasy, hyperbole and a little ragging. He has no idea how universities hire faculty.

Now you all can appreciate why I'm terrified that my grandchildren will be taught by a university similar to any that Atkins may have graduated from.

I have the feeling that A2K is a gathering place for university types. The strains of uber-liberal thought expoused here, in near absence of any far right counterbalance (and I mean far right, because so many here are so far left they think I am some sort of fascist), are enough to make many people queasy.

Terrified that your children might be educated? Now I know you must be making a joke.

The strains of uber-liberal thought

I'd love to get some idea of what you consider the term 'liberal' to actually mean...how your notion here might relate to JS Mill or to Thomas Jefferson or to, say, the characters in "It's A Wonderful Life".

Could you make a good-hearted attempt to define this term, without relying upon the contemporary writers at townhall?

Could you flesh out what might be moderate and more extreme versions of liberal thought? Could you relate and differentiate that with socialist notions or even communist ideas?

Likewise, conservatism. What does that term mean, and what might be a moderate version and an extreme version?

No, I think not. Uber is cute - I've used it myself - to pass on that wonderful flavor of nazi extremism. But I'm speaking to a very common bit of usage that begs certain questions.

Let's see if our fellow can talk straight and with some carefulness and detail.

blatham, I've read your posts for a long time. If what I say about A2K isn't obvious to you, then you have the same slant in your thought process as you do in your writing.

I suspected you wouldn't take up my challenge to argue, or at least clarify your terminology, with some carefulness and rigor. But I'd hoped you'd at least give it a try.

I love the idea of breast appreciation day. Though I admit I think of it rather as I do about Christmas...let's see it celebrated every day. However, you didn't follow through with the actual joke.
