@farmerman,
I'll wait for Mac to read that and give me the gist of it.

@farmerman,
I read Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World" several times as a youth, and my favourite bits were always the descriptions of how he built the Spray and the Libertade.

I saw "Spirit of Baltimore" at Cherbourg a few years ago, and I would be very interested to learn details of the new build, as they become available.

BTW on the flight out to Turkey we fell talking to a very interesting guy who is a photographer for Boat International, and he had some amazing tales to tell, and pictures to show (only small, on his i-phone)

(EDIT) damn, I wrote that without seeing the intervening posts. Thanks, fm.

However, my friend, (will you still be my friend?) one of those boats has its name misspelled..

@Francis,

What, you want me to be responsible for Mr Slocum's spelling?

OK, Liberdade

@McTag,
The "mini" talls like the Pride... and Sultana... will be joined by this new one.They havent chosen a proper name yet . Im sure that someone who will endow the boat fund will be in the running.

I too read Slocum , but found much more pleasure in actually taking part in boat school "for dummies". I love working with a drawknife or spokeshave.

@farmerman,
My boat plans for my curragh arrived today. Now Im going to have to stretch these mamas out on the shop floor to see how the framing can be done.

There are some really screwy types of jointery in the framing. I Hope Im not out of my league.

@farmerman,
I have stretched one or two mamas out on the shop floor in my time and my advice is to mind how you go.

@farmerman,
Im settling in with the boat plans. Ive gotten some nice pieces of cedar and maple for framing. AND, I really cleaned out my little shed in which to build it. In the dirt floor, I found a huge cache of old horseshoes buried in the dirt.

On a different note, heres a Don DUnbar photo of the EAST QUODDY HEAD LIGHT. This is the last point of land we see as we head toward Grand Manan and then the open sea towards Nova SCotia. Kinda neat , I never tire of the light, its one of the most picturesque in the whole New England? Canadian MAritime scene. (Maybe Ill start a thread on the lighthouses of the East Coast and Canada)

Farmerman, these horseshoes were there for a reason- the weight.
The next time you have a storm with a gale of wind, your barn and the half-built boat will blow away.

some pictures of the The Mississagi Lighthouse, built in 1873 by the Department of Transport of Canada to protect and guide ships through the perilous passage known as the Mississagi Strait, off the western end of the Manitoulin Island.

@McTag,
I think they were just trashed because we found several other pieces of evidence with a metal detector. There is some big piece of metal buried there and Ill go dig a bit sometime next week . One thing at a time. I hope its not Jimmy Hoffa Shocked

@Francis,
No riddle, this out building is a dirt floor and was, as far as I can see, used for a livery and blackmithing area. For all I know, from the sound the metal detector made, It could be an anvil. Its not Jimmies car cause the metal return was only about a foot or more in diameter. Its a foot or more underground and its iron, Because its raining like hell now, I dont wanna dig and cause any run -in make a mudhole where Im planning to begin my fairing work.
