I don't see how thoughts can ever be immoral. Only actiosn can ever brign harm to anyone or anything other than yourself - thoughts cannot do that, so how can they be wrong? How can adulterous thoughts be wrong, even if adultery is wrong?
Let me ask you this: How would you feel about being neighbor to someone who confessed to you he had fantasies about molesting and murdering your children? Would that change your mind about thoughts? I find it difficult to believe most crimes might not be committed without forethought - I mean, don't you agree?

I would be worried, and I'd want to move to another neighbourhood and keep my children safe. But I would have no right to accuse my neighbour of doing anything wrong - except perhaps telling me of his fantasies. If he were to act on his fantasies, he would be commiting an immoral act. But until then, they are just thoughts - I agree that some such people would eventually act on those thoughts, but that doesn't make their thoughts immoral. Only their actions, which bring harm to others, are immoral. And you're forgetting the millions of people in the world who fantasize about doing terrible things without having any intention at all of ever doing them. Are these people commiting immoral acts by fantasizing?

I remember a saying: "You can't stop a bird from flying over your head; but you can stop him from making a nest in your hair." One more question about the nefarious neighbor: If you were his spiritual advisor, shrink, guru, imam, whatever, wouldn't you think to advise him it might do him and everybody else a whole lot of good if he were to think about pizza instead?

Maybe, if it looked like he might molest and murder someone's children. But that's not the point - the thoughts are not, in themselves, harmful. Similarly, masturbating over fantasies of doing harmful things (such as adultery - which is probably the most common fantasy) is not in itself harmful to anyone else. So masturbation itself is not harmful to others - will you at least agree with that?

What's all this about birds?

Surely, thoughts are not immediately harmful to others. But, I think my shrink friends will aver the thoughts may be harmful to the individual. Just my opinion, of course.

I remember when I finally was able to give up smoking. Part of the routine was to find other things to do when the urge to smoke came about.

The bird thing is just an old saying. When you're an old geezer like me, you'll want to have a few old sayings to spout every so often. It justifies your geezerhood. Laughing

I heard that when your close to achieving orgasim you have the chance to see or communicate with GOD. Is anyone trying this technique ? This is also why the church would make it sinfull so communication and insight would be limited.

I normally breathe out audibly at that point - maybe that's the glory of God making my lungs contract. Or maybe I'm just having an orgasm.

Just because you yell out his name four times doesn't mean you are communicating with him.

Carpocratian Cult of Orgasm
Just as an aside, people should not forget that Christianity had been around for years before the Catholic Church, by groups collectively known as Gnostics who were later seen as heretical. Among these early groups was a sect following the ideas of Carpocrates. For him, the orgasm was seen as mystical union with God. They believed that an 'overdose' of sin would lead to purification by bringing the individual to understanding how terrible sin was. So, the idea of sex or masturbation as being sinful was not shared by all early Christians, in fact for most Gnostics it was to the contrary. I would not be surprised if the anti-sex doctrines were instigated by the Catholic Church scholars themselves.

Welcome esoteric. A mighty interesting first post. Many wondrous doctrines originated with the Catholic church. That's a new one for me. Shocked

how can having sex with someone you love be consider evil? unless its a case of cheating, where your left hand doesn't know what your right hand is doing.

It's a horribly abusive relationship. Sometimes I masturbate against my will.
