And what about Anthony Perkins in Psycho? Ernest Borgnine? Joan Crawford in a lot of roles. Michael Caine in Dressed to Kill.
Ernest von Stroheim in almost anything.

James Whitmore was on stage and t.v. more than the movies. He did a one man Broadway show playing Will Rogers. I recall him in a movie in which the voice of God began speaking to people over the radio. He was probably seen by more people for his Miracle Grow t.v. ads than for the good acting he did.

Eric von Stroheim. And I still love Sydney Greenstreet. So suave.

Edward G. Robinson made so many good films I hesitate to pick one over the rest. He always got to shoot Bogart until Key Largo, where they changed places and Robinson got shot. Blackballed during the McCarthy era due to charges made by what he called "certain cowboy actors", he lost stardom, but was given a new chance when they cast him in The Ten Commandments. I loved this man as both an actor and a great human being.

Mickey Rooney: one of the most talented actors I have ever seen.
Huckleberry Finn, Young Tom Edison, Boy's Town, the Mickey McGuire series, Joe - I didn't really pay that much attention to Andy Hardy series, but, when he wanted to do Andy Hardy as a radio series the studio pretty much canned him for going against their wishes, as I recall.

George C. Scott: Patton, Dr Strangelove.

Which brings us to Peter Sellars. Dr Strangelove and Lollita where he played multiple parts.

I hate to nitpick Edgar, but I 've never thought of Mickey as a villain, or a supporting actor. He is one of the alltime great entertainers though. And I'll give you this, Whwn I was a little boy and had to be in bed when DB came on, I can remember listening to this voice called Pete, talking about his wife Gladys, and cracking up. I later found out it was ol' Harry, who I believe is still wanted in several states, for stealing scenes.

How about Humphrey Bogart in films like The Petrified Forest and The Desperate Hours. Also Dennis Hopper in any one of many villainous parts. Red Rock West comes to mind.

I loved Ian Bannen - "Flight of the Phoenix", "Hope and Glory", "Braveheart", "The Waking of Ned Devine".

How about one of the queens of character actresses Edna May Oliver. Always the spinster, usually in Dickens adaptations, like the 1930s David Copperfield as Aunt Betsy Trotwood.

Here's an unexpected villain. I saw Jerry Lewis play a crook in in the TV series, "Goodfellas' quite convincingly. But the Buddy character in "Absent Minded Professor", had a real dark and cruel streak.

Mickey was not always the star, as in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

But by then,eb, mickey was a legend making a cameo appearance, wouldn't you say?
I always liked Thelma Ritter in the Doris Day movies. She was her housekeeper, her mother-in-law, her support.

Thelma Ritter, in the Solid Gold Cadillac, was a winner. And Judy Holliday died too young.

Gary Busy made quite a transition from Buddy Holly to character actor and bad guy.

He sure did.

What about Tim Robbins in Arlington Raod for a very creepy villain?
