um ... I don't like seeing any woman described as a "slag", really. And I couldn't give a hoot about the marriage, either. Just wanted to say that! Razz

What exactly does "slag" mean over in England? The definition I've seen is "abusive woman."

Note to some folks on this thread: cjhsa (me) and CalamityJane (also known as uppercase CJ) aren't even the same sex, much less the same poster.

in canada we have made enormous strides separating the country from the crown. our postal service used to the "royal mail", that name has now now been changed to "canada post" - hey, that's real progress, isn't it ? btw the change in name almost grought down the government of the day !

we came to canada in 1956 and one of the cheaper pleasures of the day was going to the movies. we noticed that towrds the end of the movie - before you saw " THE END" - people would get up quickly to leave the movie theatre. took us a few movies to figure it out. the reason for leaving early : when the movie ended, a recorded "god save the queen" would be played and you were expected to stand at attention ! i guess most most canadians didn't think they needed to stay any longer than necessary ! (we too learned to leave early !).

answer to the earlier question : i was a "hamburger" before i became a canadian.

I guess I was one of those that stayed Hamburger :-)

It really saddens me that we Canadians are not patriotic like our American neighbours. They proudly fly their flag and they give honour and respect to both the flag and the playing of their National Anthem. People here do not even stop when the anthem is being played.

Maybe it is because Canada grew from a small population of British heritage to a large population of a very multi-cultural nature. Many immigrants are more concerned with what is happening in their country of origin than what is happening in their new country.

Tradition used to be something to be proud of.

i think canada has enough maturity as a country so that we do not need to be tied to the british monarchy. i believe the australians who are pwobably more british than canadians have been able to distance themselves somewhat better from the monarchy without any harm to australia. i think it is one thing to be a proud canadian, but quite another to be a proud monarchist(i'm not one of them, but have no objection if some want to be monarchists.).

i'm also glad we use the term 'canada post' rather than 'royal mail' - what could possibly be 'royal' about the mail ?

The only thing Royal about the mail is that it is a Royal pain in the *** :-)

I guess it is easier for folks from other countries to dismiss the Monarch as our Head of State than those of us of British heritage and ties to England.

Then again, Canada would not be the country that we are now without the immigration over the years. The only thing that irks me is when people become Canadian citizens and then demonstrate in the streets, cause chaos etc. when something happens in their old country. If they are more concerned with their old country, then they should have probably stayed there.

You would think that Canada was Italy or Greece when the World Soccer Championships are on. Laughing

If things had turned out differently, we could all be under the French regime now. Or, flying the Stars & Stripes ;-)

Sign to me that Canada is more mature as a country.

I hated seeing all the flags and such in the US, and hate that I see some people starting to get into all that palaver here.

I agree. Chauvinistic patriotism and nationalism are dangerous.
