Haha. Thanks for the explanation, I didn't get it, but it is awfully clever of you.

... I think with Morris Dancing you have to bounce up & down to make those bells ring. It reminds me a lot of the Deer Dancers of Sonora.... which makes me think Morrising started as a religious rite of some strange & awful kind.

you might be right Piffka

from http://www.mit.edu/~jcb/Red_Herring/origins/mo22.shtml

Origin of the Morris
The true origins of morris were revealed not long ago in a newspaper article about pheromones, the molecules used by many species from insects to man to broadcast information about the condition of an animal and especially to act as a sexual attractant.

Apparently morris evolved as a courting ritual. Morris men would keep handkerchiefs under their armpits to absorb the pheromones in their sweat and then wave said handkerchiefs to attract the females of the species.

Doesn't seem to work, though...

These Seattle jonnies have rubber-soled footwear, what you call 'em, sneakers, so they can't make the right noise.
Wooden clogs with steel segs, tha needs.

You have got to be kidding.

Charlie and Camilla made the entire institution of the monarchy a long-running joke for decades. Do you seriously think the Queen has not wished a thousand times that she could travel back to the day when Charles first saw Camilla and do whatever it takes to keep that from happening?

The wedding was announced only a few weeks ago, to prevent the hoopla from building and making it more visible.

It was originally scheduled for a Friday afternoon, so people would NOT watch on TV.

Much effort was spent desperately trying to convice the British people that if Charles becomes King, Camilla would not become Queen. As it turns out, that is fiction-she would in fact become Queen.

Would the Royal Family do all this if Camilla was viewed as an asset?

An asset? They clearly are trying to downplay the whole marriage as much as they can!

if thhere is to be any hope of the monachy surviving, charles would have to retire - rather quickly i think - to live the life of a country gentleman. as i stated earlier, listening to the people living in this "bastion of the monarchy ", there seems to be little appeal left in a continuing monarchy. hbg

What is wrong with Camilla that "the Queen" would dislike her so much?

steve : KINGSTON (ontario/canada) was usually considered "a bastion of the monarchy". here we have "queen's university", ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE, "FORT HENRY" and other reminders of the monarchy. hbg

I don't know for sure. I think it might have something to do with the Queen having to keep her distance somewhat from a woman who is divorced and will only ever be step mother to William and Harry...but hell what do I know. I only started to be in the slightest interested in anything royal when Diana died.

Suppose I could make a few discreet phone calls though. Prince Philip is probably the one to give a direct answer...just dialling now.

Hamburger Thanks. Is anywhere in Canada more pro monarchy? How about British Columbia?

Just in case Phil doesn't answer -- everyone seems to know that Camilla was not right well before Diane came along. Do you have to be a Brit innured to royal sensibilities to see this and that's why I don't?

I guess I don't quite get the idea of a "commoner."

I think several people here are barking up the wrong family tree.

I used to be of the opinion that Camilla represented a nail in the coffin of royalty here.

I have recently completely changed my opinion however, and I now think Camilla will strengthen it. I think the people are taking to her. She seems a nice woman, anyway. I now think she will add a bit of gravitas and reality and even "ordinariness" to Chas's bizarre life, and the people will warm to her- indeed are already warming to her.
