I found an avatar on another site that I thought I'd use in place of the one I had here. I deleted my avatar (the black panther) and attempted to load the new avatar. I couldn't do it. (No surprise there.) So I figured I go back to the panther, and that would be the end of it. When I click on the avatar selection, my screen freezes. I can't select anything. I can't leave the site, the Net, nothing.

So now I'm nekkid at a2k. Embarrassed Crying or Very sad

Help!

I try using adobe or some othe r program , to no avail , and Im limiting myself here. Any ideas?

Dunno if it'll help, Farmerman, but you could try downloading and using IrfanView , a free image processor. Another option might be to take a screenshot of the image you want, then manipulating that as appropriate with whatever image processor you prefer. Just a reminder; avatars can no longer be hotlinked. If you want to use one not already in the on-site archive, you have to copy it to your machine then upload it here, but you prolly already know that.

So, I decided to try this.

Went to Paint.

Uploaded one of my photos.

Used the box to shrink it to just under 6KB.

Saved it to my hard drive.

Went to Profile, uploaded it via browse.

Submitted it.

Didn't work.

Did I miss something ?

Did you get some sort of message? I usually find that if I submit something that doesn't meet one of the criteria, there's a message.

No message.

Just showed my name with no avatar.

Tried it again. Same result.

Thanks for your response.

When you "Saved As" the image to your drive was it either a .jpg or a .gif? Those are the only image types supported by the avatar feature, if I recall.

Anther thing you might wanna try is to "Copy-and-Save" all self-entered info in your profile, then clicking "Reset" instead of "Submit". Then log off the website. Close that browser window, open a new one, clear your cache, then navigate back to A2K, log in, go to your profile, paste all the personal stuff back in and reselect your preferences. Go to the avatar gallery, select a random avatar, and submit your profile. Clear your cache, go to a thread you're on, and see if you got the stock avatar OK. If so, the problem is in the upload.

Timber,

Thanks for the information.

The file is a Windows BMP Image.

So does that mean it's a no-go ?

(I read the latter part of your post, but my head started to implode Confused so I actually didn't try it yet. If the BMP file is the problem, I'm thinking that input won't actually help?)

Figured that was a likely thing to check. Bitmaps (.bmp) won't work. Convert it to a .jpg or .gif and it should work fine. Lemme know if ya need help converting it.

Good catch, Timber ! Thanks.

Guess progressives and conservatives can work together after all ! Very Happy

Is there an option in PAINT (or elsewhere) for converting the file?

Try Irfanview ... small footprint, no spyware, fairly flexible, and free.

Cannot upload avatar
I have tried uploading an avatar from my pc but I get some sort of errors at the top of the page. It does say however that my profile has been update but all I have is a square with an x in it where my avatar should be. I have also tried to pull it from another site which seems to be successful but I get the same box with and x in it. What am I doing wrong?

What precisely is the error message you get?

A quick couple thoughts - what filetype is your desired avatar, what is the overall file size, and what are the H/W dimensions of the image you're attempting to upload?

I am having the same problem when I try to upload a new avatar; however, the avatar gallery seem to be working fine Smile

Here is the error I am getting:
