Film recommendation for the isolated... All The President's Men. Just as a reminder of what ****-heels Republicans tend to be.

What good purpose is served by Bernie continuing with his lost candidacy?

Perhaps Sanders doesn't feel like he has lost yet.

But even if he does think he has lost, by continuing to amass large numbers of delegates, he ensures that he is a natural second choice if Biden self destructs.

Alternatively, he could refuse to withdraw until the Democrats agree to adopt some of his ideas as part of their party platform.

But ultimately, why does there have to be any good purpose?

Withdrawing and conceding is for when you are defeated by someone worthy of respect. I do not agree that progressive candidates are worthy of respect.

I think that when people lose to a progressive candidate (and this includes when two progressives run against each other), the loser should stay in the race to the very end and mount as many recount demands and legal challenges as possible just to delay things. And then after they've delayed things as much as possible they should just walk away without conceding or acknowledging that the other guy won.

@blatham,
It’s a good movie. But we only need look at the last 50 years to see the assholish Republican nature. If we need reminding of something, it’s probably of decent Republican public servants. My memory needs serious jogging about that.

@hightor,
Yang's UBI is looking pretty good right now. Tulsi proposed a UBI at least through the crisis.

UBI is inevitable in the not too distant future anyway IMO.

I hear you and it's a fair point for sure. They aren't all ****-heels. But the difficulty you have in identifying such individuals points to the problem. The culture of the party is so badly corrupted and has been for so long that we're at a bit of a loss here.

‘A heir and a spare’.

This is easy....campaigns end up "suspending" not outright cancelling.

What gets "suspended" can get "unsuspended" just as quick.

@hightor,
Surely instead of bailing out companies during this horrible crisis, money could be better spent giving it to states so that they can deal with their state's health care workers and hospitals and things like that. Time enough to worry about the economy when the dead quit piling up. If this Pandemic goes on to summer, people are going to run out of their stockpiles of food and other sundry items. It seems like we are heading towards medieval times. I hope I am full of hyperbole. I had to quit listening to it on the TV, it kept me up at night worrying about it. I was cold in the night and thought maybe I had a fever. Woke the hubby up, he got impatient with me...It is all scary.

I hope the republican senators are feeling bad about not impeaching the President. He has been lousy dealing with this. Not sure Pence would be better though.

Morally speaking, I think postponment is the right thing to do.
Definitely a fair argument. I've made it myself. But if done, it must be done in a manner which facilitates maximum voting as soon as possible via mail or some other viable system. If not, precedents can be set which totalitarian types can avail themselves of later. Like in November.

I agree.

When is the "smart money" on Wall Street gunna make up it's mind about what's "smart," I wonder? They seem to change their mind every day.

Quote:
U.S. equity markets rallied Tuesday after the Federal Reserve announced it was taking action to grease the wheels of the commercial paper market, which is critical for supporting the flow of credit to businesses and households.

The gains have the major averages on track to claw back some of their losses from the steepest one-day slide since the Black Monday crash of 1987. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 528 points, or 2.6 percent, while the broader S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite soared 4.5 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively.

@snood,
Don't insult my intelligence if you don't want me to insult yours.

I suppose you're thinking that since the primaries now pose a health risk, the simplest way to stop them is for Sanders to drop out? That it's the right thing to do for him at this stage?

Maybe you're right. The reason why Sanders is keeping it up at this point are twofold: 1 is to impact Biden's platform, which is probably not worth the risk to public health at this point, especially high in the hypothesis there are no postponments. 2 is that Biden's rise is still recent and he could still implode. That's at least what I would think.

@oralloy,
One purpose it serves is that it is enticing Biden to shift his policy stances further and further to the left, in an attempt to pick up Burnie voters. Burnie induces such shifts in Biden every time they debate.

I believe that is a question for Sanders and is supporters. They have a right to continue their efforts, even if you don't agree. Your suggestions that issues of "morality" should require them to desist, are laughably absurd on their face. You are merely putting an undeserved shield around something which is merely your opinion. There are words describing such behavior..

#IllinoisPrimary is a complete disaster. Polling places have been eliminated with no notice to voters. I’m an election judge sitting on my couch with no place to go. My friend just showed up at hers and the doors are locked. This whole primary should be invalid

Says it all right there, don't it? The Democrats hacks in don't really want any input from downstate voters. Outside of Cook, virtually every other county in Illinois strongly favored Trump in 2016, after all.
