@farmerman,
I would pay good money to watch a debate between those two, and I expect Bernie to positively humiliate Trump during such an event, in a way that a prudent incremental centrist will never be able to achieve.

I agree, I've watching them as well, they are very well done.

@engineer,
Speaking of Buttigieg, now that he has Iowa to himself, and no, not done by Pelosi out to get Sanders, he has been sprinting across Iowa making some inroads against some previous Trump voters who are disappointed in Trump in his economic and draining swamp campaign promises.

Pete Buttigieg picks up the pace in Iowa as impeachment keeps others away

One of my Great-Great Grand parents was black.

I also have considerable African ancestry, 20% of my genetic makeup, but I knew enough not to foist myself off as a "Negro" in order to secure scholarships set aside for racial minorities when I was in high school.
Quote:
Can I claim to be African-American then?

I suppose you can claim anything you wish — the problem arises because people belonging to racial minorities are assumed to face discrimination so if you "pass" for white you don't don't suffer from the effects of racial prejudice. I doubt that Warren was ever turned down for a job or denied her civil rights because people perceived her as a Native American. I've heard conflicting stories about whether she parlayed her ethnic status to secure entry into law school.

@Olivier5,
I think you overestimate Trump's ability to be humiliated. Clinton destroyed him repeatedly and I'm sure he will tell you he won - big time.

I think is far more likely that if Warren received any extra consideration, her gender was responsible. Warren was balancing family and college in the 60's and 70's when women (especially married women with children) faced significant discrimination based on gender.

I watched Sanders and Clinton debate and didn't think one was especially gifted at it over the other.

@hightor,
Well, now, I am not sure about you're trying to say. My granddaughter if she was around during the old south would have been considered Octoroon, she lighter complexion with some black features such as her hair and facial features. Already she has faced a little (very little) ugliness. But probably not as bad as her cousin who also bi-racial with darker skin and but her facial features are more Caucasian. Both are beautiful, both have black fathers, I think both could be mark bi-racial if they have it, other if they don't I guess; in a college admission paper.

I think it's very possible that Warren simply believed the family lore she grew up hearing,

As I've noted previously, my mother's side of the family (Low German speaking Mennonite) were convinced that there was a significant Jewish ancestry in the family's past. I never spoke with my grandparents about this but my mother and her siblings all presumed it so. It was only two years ago when a DNA test proved this family story to be false.

That's my fault.

"Bi-racial" is one of the fastest growing categories in the USA when race and ethnicity boxes need to be checked. That's progress. I can understand the affirmative action angle — if you face discrimination because of racial or ethnic prejudice then I'm not adverse to programs which seek to redress this societal problem. My beef is with the whole practice of classifying people by race for general identification purposes. Why should the government have to know my racial heritage in order to issue me a driver's license?

That's a smart observation. Trump always falls to bullying and coarse insults. And when he's doing his rallies or when he's on FOX, that is what makes his base laugh.

@blatham,
You may think that is bad, but, (not to bring up Pocahontas) my mother's family all thought for years we were related to Pocahontas through John Rolfe and also Faye Raye. (she played on the first King Kong movie) Someone did one of those ancestry things, we are of course related to neither. We have tall tales about everything in our family. I think it is what we do for fun, that and make up tales about each other and ourselves (or at least stretch the truth) to entertain during family get togethers.

But has it got to the point where you have to take a DNA to fill out a college admission form?

David Brooks's neo-liberal screed for today:

The Bernie Sanders Fallacy

Here's a summary for you. Capitalism good. Socialism bad.

Quote:
But if you want to deal with our real problems, stop the us/them warfare and start dealing with productivity inequality.

Sorry, if you want to deal with our real problems propose some method of mitigating the environmental effects of carbon pollution and human overpopulation.
