Democrat Andrew Gillum rode a surge of liberal support from young people and African Americans to a stunning primary victory Tuesday and the historic opportunity to be the first black governor in Florida’s history.


With 94 percent of the votes counted, Gillum had an unofficial 3 percentage point lead over his closest rival, former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham. Gillum overwhelmed Graham in Miami-Dade and Broward, the state’s two largest Democratic counties, by more than a 2-to-1 margin, in the highest turnout for a midterm primary election in Florida history.

“I am overwhelmed,” Gillum told a cheering crowd of supporters at a victory party at Hotel Duval in downtown Tallahassee. “I want you to know that this thing is not about me. This race is about every single one of us. Those of us inside this room. Those outside of this room. Those who voted for me. Those who didn’t vote at all. And those who didn’t vote for me because they are Republicans. But I want to be their governor, too.”

Running to the left of his rivals and despite being vastly outspent, the charismatic and proudly liberal Gillum built a devoted statewide following of progressives. He had a well-received message of social justice and lifting up the downtrodden and an appeal to Florida’s growing diversity.

Graham late Tuesday said she congratulated Gillum and gave him a message.

I'm glad Andrew Gillum won the democrat primary for Governor in Florida, I think he will win the general by a good margin. Soros must think so too as he and another big money donor donated to Gillum.

Excuse for a moment, I know this thread is more about elections but, I was so happy to read the following and thought it belonged under a progressive thread since it is a progressive issue.

I think some of the credit should go to the brave NFL players who have brought such awareness to this issue of cops killing unarmed blacks. I am not so sure a jury a couple of years ago would have convicted the cop in Texas.

It is called old age and Biden and Sanders both have it. A chronic condition that leads to death every time.

I haven't heard any love between Biden and Sanders, but in politics anything - ANYTHING - is possible.

The obvious has a way of escaping the progressive mind. Can't say I am surprised.

True, both are pretty liberal, Sander more so, but Biden is more well rounded in presidential skills so to speak. I doubt they would clash much.

You got to be kidding me. I hope he keeps on going in that vein, I don't think as much as the country is as racist as much as it seems sometimes, even in the south.

If they could meet somewhere in the middle on their policies it could work.
