@georgeob1,
That’s exactly what happened. Unfortunately most of the people here don’t have any idea at all how sophisticated the comms system are on our vessels nor the intricate arrangements made between countries to avoid exactly what happened to the Liberty.
NSA has provided a number of declassified documents and they are accessible at NSA.gov. I haven’t checked on the USS Liberty, I don’t know if they have been declassified as yet but I have read numerous documents concerning the Vietnam Nam war and the Korean War. Not everything can be released at the same time. There is an in house program that uses experienced intelligence analysts to properly declassify documents and release them for public view. What’s available is all there on the site. It’s a whole bunch more informative than Wikipedia.
As far as the conflict between Israel and neighboring hostile countries, history will sort all that out. However, the attack in the USS Liberty is hardly a ‘whoops’. The Israelies, absolutely knew that the Liberty was ours and they knew exactly what her mission was....the comms crew would have noticed increased activity, and would be reporting back to HQ’s. Trying to sink the Liberty was a futile attempt to prevent that from happening.
