@edgarblythe,

It's all a bunch of character assassination, these criticisms of OAC. They attack her because her positions align so well with Bernie Sanders. If she sounded like Hillary the Dems attacking her would be loving her as much as her followers.
I don't think you've got that quite right. There is character assassination going on, for sure, but that is mainly coming from the right. This is entirely predictable given her charisma, her confidence, her physical attractiveness and her communication expertise. She's a very real future threat, at least as seen from a GOP standpoint. So the strategy is to begin spreading negative memes about her to dampen enthusiasm and to forward a particular narrative that will hopefully serve their purposes later.

I read a lot of lefty opinion and there really has been very, very little that's negative in portrayals of her in that literature. But one can surely make the argument that she may well be too confident of her knowledge and abilities - at this point. But these are the sorts of things which we quite validly attend to with a "rising star" politico of such a young age.

@blatham,
I suspect the fondest wish of the RNC is that Octavio-Cortez is on the Democrat ticket in the next election.

@blatham,
I don't care if she is still in diapers. She makes a lot more sense than the people telling her to sit down and shut up.

@georgeob1,
She's too young to be president, so it is a certainty that she will not be on anybody's ticket.

@edgarblythe,
Well you're right about that. I'll revise my statement to say that the fondest wish of the RNC is that Octavio-Cortez and the new Democrat cadre of extreme leftists remain prominent in the party and the political spotlight.

@georgeob1,
In the next election, she will most likely be running for re-election to the seat she currently has.....I hope the RNC isn't too disappointed.

Hello, Newman.

I expect you'll recall the delight on the left when Trump headed up your ticket. Just saying.

But of course you're right. She is a female, she's of mixed ethnicity and she's young. In other words, the exact opposite of Trump voters or, if you like, of Ed Meese. What's not to like for you folks?

As long as she has a prominent role in the platform and public face of the Democrat party, I suspect the RNC will be pleased.

To clarify, I think she's quite fantastic and there's little she has said re policy prescriptions (at least that I've read though that admittedly isn't much) with which I disagree. And for me, her youthfulness is an enormous asset to US politics generally and I definitely hope she keeps communicating as she has been. I have no beef but I do have a requirement... she has to be cognizant of how much she needs to learn otherwise much of what talents she has will be tragically wasted.

We can agree there. Without progressive reform, both parties are stinkeroo.

If you are referring to the Democrat delight at the result of the 2016 Republican primary, I do indeed recall it.

The next election is a difficult call. Trump's crudity is vividly in the public eye, but so are the actions he has taken in the public interest (though there will be the usual partisan debate about that). The lurch to the far left now ongoing among Democrats is an early gift to Trump for the next election.

This realignment on the left that is pushing the party to the left has been going on for years prior to her arrival in November. This is apparently not a matter of distaste for US voters generally if we're to confront what happened to the GOP in November and what has been happening to Trump's favorable/unfavorable ratings or as regards how Americans poll on issues such as raising taxes on the very wealthy to levels that were in place while America became pre-eminent in the world (a status now very much at risk and in doubt).

@blatham,
70% of Americans want M4A
Mildly lesser but substantial percentages of the US electorate want the progressive policies backed by Bernie.

This is incredibly good news for Democrats if they select a progressive in the primary.
—————————
A weird wild card is the indication that the GOP will run some folks against Trump. I feel confident we can beat Trump (if the establishment Dems don’t **** it up again), but the disaffected GOP and their donors could all come back into play for a decent candidate.

Entering the cycle, three billionaires appeared poised to seek the presidency: Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (Forbes estimated his wealth at over $46 billion); Starbucks founder Howard Schultz (Forbes pegged his riches at $3.3 billion); and ex-hedge fund chieftain and impeachment activist Tom Steyer (Forbes ball-parked him at $1.6 billion), who has since removed his name from contention.

Trump is worth $3.1 billion, according to Forbes.

Early polls showed none of the three would start from a position of power. A December straw poll from the liberal advocacy group MoveOn found Bloomberg in eighth place among 2020 contenders while Steyer finished a distant 23rd and Schultz found himself in dead-last.

If any of the mega-wealthy potential candidates "look like they're running simply because of their own ego or they like their names in lights, their candidacy will never get out of the gate," Jesse Ferguson, a high-ranking staffer on Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, told NBC News.

@Lash,
I do think that the Dems' best hope is for a strong push towards progressive values and policies. I think it is electorally smart and morally correct.

God knows what is going to happen with the GOP over the next two years. It is just a ******* dog's breakfast over there. But it certainly is my hope that Trump holds on. A replacement front man will give the opportunity for the GOP to rebrand itself again and to drop these last years down the memory hole.

Someone please shoot these dumbfucks. If ever the blind idiocy of "businessmen will make the best political leaders" was readily apparent as blind idiocy, it would be right now.

@blatham,
Yeah, I can’t believe I’m saying it, but it’s Trump I want to run against in 2020. Luckily for us, Bloomberg is like a robot, but I’m worried the Starbucks guy may be able to market himself well...
