What the F*ck? Now you're playing the clock work orange role. You can't just go ahead and castrate people just because they are potential abusers. Even if they commited abuse once, nothing gives the society the right to castrate them. What if one, only one of them really gets results by going to thereapy?

I agree. Did you know the Nazi used to castrate homosexuals in order to prevent us from having children?

From what I know chemical castration is not permanent castration. I only mentioned this as an alternative to regular castration since for convicted felons this is not ethical. I was only talking about people already convicted of course. I am not for pre-emptive crime prevention like Bush.

But if you are a person with a child fetish, you take measures to protect kids from yourself. If you are an alcoholic you don't work in a bar. LIkewise, If you are turned on by little children you should not be around them. Let's say you are a teacher and you are turned on by your students. You are aware of your urges, but you know it's wrong. Why not take an extra step to make sure you don't act on it.

Chemical or physical castration has never demonstrated a postive outcome re pedophiles. This kind of thinking is rooted in the premise that pedophilia is a sexually motivated event rather than a psychiatric pathology.

Exactly.

I would equate such actions to torture; and ineffectual torture at that.

We can do nothing, short of sending every known paedophile to a concentration camp, there's nothing we can do. Of course there's the little fact that most paedophiles who abuse children are not exactly known to be paedophiles.

There are other important issues at hand that would eclipse a world wide paedophile witch hunt.

Tenoch, if your directing that question at me, I would say yes there is some things that can be done depending on what are the values we are working with. first of all we are highly unlike to prevent occurances of pedophilia but we can reduce them if we as a society deem that protection of children is our primary goal. Psychiatric Forensics Units could be established (which we already have for other criminal events, that would have two functions (1) would be isolation from potential victims (2) development of potential effective therapies. I would remove pedophilia from the judicial/prison system just like say, public health laws which can be used to restrict individuals from contaminating the greater society with minimal deprivation of civil rights. Not an simple program but neither is this a simple problem.

It sounds wonderful Dys, but would it really work? More importantly what would be the steps to such a process, it sounds interesting and very promising. Why isn't this being done already?

JFK asked that we put a man on the moon in ten years, we did it. Really just a question of priorities.
