Estrostep FE....Know Anything About It?

Reply Tue 1 Feb, 2005 05:16 pm
Ok, so I went to the doctor about my Jekyll and Hyde syndrome....my doctor switched my birth control pills. Anyone out there take Estrostep FE? I'd really like to know if I am going to get fat or have a bizarre OC reaction. Thanks!

Here some Hints for you Bella Dea :

Quote:
When should I be careful taking Estrostep Fe ?

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from oral contraceptive use. This risk increases with age, becoming quite marked in women over 35 years old, and is even greater for those who are heavy smokers (15 or more cigarettes per day). Women who use oral contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke.
Do not take oral contraceptives if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Exposure to estrogen and progestin hormones can potentially harm a developing baby. If you become pregnant while taking oral contraceptives, you should stop taking it and call your doctor immediately.
Because estrogens appear in breast milk, consult with your doctor before breast-feeding.
Oral contraceptives slightly increase your risk of strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, heart attacks, gallbladder disease, and liver tumors. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for a copy of the patient labeling which explains these risks in more detail.
It may take a long time for you to become pregnant after you stop taking oral contraceptives. Discuss this issue with your doctor.
this medication may cause a patchy, darkening of the skin on the face (melasma). Higher-strength oral contraceptives are more likely to cause melasma. Sunlight may intensify this darkening and you may need to avoid prolonged sun exposure and sunlamps. Consult your doctor regarding use of sunscreens and protective clothing.
If you are near-sighted or wear contact lenses, you may develop vision problems while using oral contraceptives. Also, your tolerance for wearing contact lenses may decrease. Contact your eye doctor if these problems occur.
Before having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking an oral contraceptive.
Discuss any concerns that you may have about the development of endometrial (uterine) or breast cancer with your doctor.

Thanks Francis, but I've been on the pill since I was 17. Smile

I have been on Ortho Novum, Ortho Cyclen and now Estrostep FE. I didn't gain weight with the others but Estrostep has different levels of estrogen, where as the other two didn't. I just don't want to suddenly pack on the pounds and since I've never taken this particular BCP before, I wanted to know if anyone who's taken if has had any unplesant side effects. Like weight gain or dark patches appearing on your skin (??that would suck!).

That would be too much for anyone. You'd think with everything they've done they could eliminate such hidious side effects.

Haven't taken the stuff - what does a google search on it tell you?

Interesting that the doc seems to think that the BC may be a factor. I always found that my mood/emotions/personality got so evened out from the BC that I decided against it as an option. I need my ups and downs.

I'll go poke around on Medline and see if there's any research on the Estrostep.

My doc said that since I'd been on the Ortho cycle so long, my body may have changed and is no long reacting well to the hormones. If this doesn't work, we are moving on to low dose anti-depressants.

I just started taking Estrostep fe. I actually am on the very last week (the iron pills) of my first pack. Did you begin taking them yet?

Have you experienced any side effects? I didn't notice anything with the first pack... maybe a little sick feeling a couple times, but nothing major. Also my period was very very light, which was nice, but I still had cramping for a couple days.. yuck!* If you don't mind we should share our experience with this pill cause I haven't been able to find too many people taking it. Laughing

Me either......I wonder why that is? Makes me a little nervous....

I have been cranky. Not b*tchy but just a little cranky. I think it is the drop in estrogen. My other pills were straight 35mg of estrogen all month. These are the 20mg, 25mg and 35mg, each week. So..I suspect that is the culprit. I didn't have a problem with acne before so nothing new there. No sickness. Just crankiness. I have been an instigator, as my husband put it the other day.

I am setting up here for my period so.....we'll see. I apparently lied when I said I had been taking for 2 1/2 weeks. Only 1 1/2 weeks. Sorry. I am going into my third week next week. I don't have bad periods physically so the only thing I am looking to change is my vicious PMS psychosis.

Let me know how things are going. I will update you periodically.

This is my first time on birth control. My Dr. recommended Estrostep because of the different levels to help prevent nausea and other side effects. I will start my second pack on Sunday so hopefully things will keep going well. Smile

I have taken Estrostep fe for 3+ years and I have not gained any weight at all. I do get really moody during the third week of pills and have been recently getting migraines for 3 days during that same week. Other than that my first 3 years on estrostep were fine. My period is always really light and extremely short, 3 days or so.

Just an update. I had a fairly decent week leading up to my period. I only freaked once or twice and not nearly as bad as usual. I don't know if this is a good month or if it's working. We'll see.

Physical PMS symptoms are practically nill. This is nice.

**sigh** Just wish I felt more like writing. **sigh**
