That's right, Reyn! Here, we can do exactly as we please.

Hmm. All this drinking...we need some food to balance it. Sophie took a chef's tour of French patisseries in Paris last month, and she's dying to show off what she learned.

Which one would you like to try? (I will be more than happy to eat whatever is left!)

The two on the bottom left look the most appealing to me but I bet that most of them are quite delicious.

Can we have a cheaters' guide to what each dessert might entail?

And after my dinner tonight, I didn't open that bottle of red wine I mentioned above. I guess I could save it for later. What's the best way of storing wine when one doesn't have a wine rack or cellar?

Here in Louisiana, it is a bit early for any alcoholic libation. But I have plenty of Dutch Chocolate Almondine Coffee for anyone that would like a cup!

@Eva,
Yikes! Inspired by dag's possible trip to Nice, France I did The Thinker and crepes and got ignored. Smile

Well, I'm not crying in my beer, but I used to love the draft kind.

Absolutely not! (giggles) That would take all the fun out of it!

Any cool, dark place will do. Just remember to store it on its side so the cork inside the bottle stays wet. If the cork dries out, air will slowly get into the bottle (cork is porous, you know) and spoil the wine.

I didn't mean to ignore you, Miss Letty. The photo of Rodin's "Thinker" prompted a small research project for me. I knew a little about it, but I've been combing through my docent materials and learned quite a few more interesting facts.

Rodin was commissioned by the French government in 1879 to create an elaborate doorway for the proposed Museum of Decorative Art. The Museum was never built, but Rodin became obsessed with his composition and worked on it for the rest of his life. His theme was Dante's poem, "The Divine Comedy." Rodin called his monumental bronze work "The Gates of Hell," which was meant to remind people of Ghiberti's hugely famous and influential Renaissance doors on the Florence Baptistry known as the "Gates of Paradise." "The Thinker" was the central image in Rodin's "Gates" and was meant to represent Dante thinking of his poem and becoming involved in the creative process.

Back in a second...I'm off to find an image of the entire "Gates of Hell" project. I saw it in the Musee Orsay in Paris a few years back.

(edit) Here it is.

Thanks, Eva. Now we know where the expression "hotter than the hinges of hell" comes from.

Hey, it's getting near high tea time, so how about this, y'all.

A.M. cocoa is a mite hot for me, right now.

Oh wow...look at the mess this place has become since we left!
Somebody grab a broom and start over there by the bar. I'll go take a look at the kitchen. Jacques said he'd be here in a couple of hours to help us reopen the place. He's bringing a few possible replacements for Sophie, so we can meet them and choose a new chef.

(wipes a finger through the dust on the bar)

I've missed this old place. We had a lot of good times here.

(opens swinging kitchen door, takes one look, frantically calls cleaning crew...)

@Eva,
What a friggin' dump this is, it's no wonder I wandered into that A.A. meeting next door. At least they have a selection of cookies and the occasional chocolate cake. They also have exceedingly good coffee and flickering florescent lights along with these really neat hard metal folding chairs. I doubt you can match that.

Hmm...maybe I can turn this joint into a 50s style diner.

{Waves hand through clouds of dust}
<coughs>
Um, I <cough> brought this mixed case of some Chilean and some Austral <cough> Australian wines.
{Walks towards the smaller bar} Over here okay??

Erm. I have to go get um, my asthma inhaler and maybe some dust masks.

I'll be right back.

[Someone mutters half loudly] Yeah, by Monday.

@Joe Nation,
Oh! Thanks, Joe!!! Before you leave, let's take that case down to the cellar. Follow me.

Uh oh. Looks like somebody's been partying down here while we were away. I'll send some of the cleaning crew down here to clear this out. You need to take care of that asthma! In the meantime, just leave that case back upstairs on the bar, okay? Thanks.

@Sturgis,
I'm sorry you have to see the place looking like this, Sturgis, but I promise, we'll have it straightened back out in no time.

So they're holding AA meetings next door now? Well, good! If we run into any problem patrons, we'll know just where to send them.

Now, let's go see about that kitchen...

Not too bad. Looks like Sophie left everything in working order. <sigh> It's going to be tough to replace her. I hope Jacques knows some good people.

@Eva,
Sorry I'm so late in posting this, but I was in Adelaide, Australia, last year in August, and had the opportunity with three others to visit the Barossa Wine Country where we tasted some good Shiraz. One winery even opened a $100 bottle, and let us taste it. I thought it was good, but $100?
