Oh Lady J, it sounds like we have much in common. If you visit Letty's thread, WA2K Radio here: http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1250653#1250653 ,
you will find a song that I identify with whole heartedly.

Oh, Diane...that was so beautiful! As I sit here amongst boxes and boxes from packing and stacks of what to keep and what to give to the Home Hospice Store and what to simply toss away, watching my daughters stack grow higher than mine as she readies herself for her move to Texas, your song just made me sit and cry in the very best of ways.

If you don't mind, I will refer back to it often! When I get oh so very tired and need a peek into my future that awaits, it will bring me the strength to know why I am doing what I am doing right this minute.

Thank you Diane. Thank you very much. Smile

Hello, Francis! May I have a glass as well? Hope I didn't offend you with my question. I'm researching that period of French history today. Seems there's more to it than they're telling 5th graders these days. Wink

To late to give an answer tonight. We"ll speak tomorrow, my charming lady!

Francis, I may have a few days in May before I return home. I'll be in Berlin, but must return to London for my flight home. Is two days in Paris (my sixth) worth it? <grin>

For c.i - it's vintage time now in South Australia and we're having some very warm weather for March and the growers are very pleased. Apparently the weather is ripening the fruit nicely and they've predicting a very high quality for the vintage. I was listening to an interview on the radio and the McLaren Vale shiraz is apparently going to be very high quality and a very competitive price so you might like to keep that info in mind when it comes on the market in North America.

Francis, Too late! I just made my train reservations from Berlin to Brussels for May 12, then from Brussels to London for May 13. I fly home on May 14 from London. Shucks.

goodfielder, Will make a hard copy to save. I really like the Shiraz (the first time for me); it's fruit flavor stays in your mouth for a minute or two after drinking. Thanks for the head's up.

Well, friends...

Francis and I have been discussing the question I asked about his country's Revolution on PMs. He was afraid the conversation might not be appropriate here, but I assured him we were among friends and everyone would find his remarks interesting. So here's the gist of it...

Eva wrote:
Do the French people find it a strange twist of history (I confess, I do) that their ancestors most violently rejected the concept of royalty during the Revolution, only to accept an emperor just a few years later?

Francis wrote:
Even though I have a well based view on the history of French revolution, what I say hereafter is only my opinion :

- People didnt reject monarchy, they revolted because they were hungry, they paid too much taxes and they worked to much for nothing.
They were harassed by taxes collectors and by aristocrats.

I'll try to find documents in english, I've many but in french.

- Following the revolution were ten years of disorder, war and horror.
People were tired of all this. When Napoléon made his coup, people at first accepted that with relief. Then those who opposed where shot.

I think this were the basics to you question. I suppose you'll have more questions. Dont hesitate to ask me.

I'll be back in a minute with my follow-up comments. Meanwhile, folks, feel free to jump in here.

So the people did not reject the concept of royalty (as we are told) so much as they rejected the then-current regime. That makes much more sense. And yes, I'm sure hunger did play a big part in it. A government that cannot feed its people cannot govern. We've seen that happen in Haiti a few times, haven't we?

I did not know that Napoleon had dissenters shot. I do know that there are many similar indistinguished moments in my own country's history, so it should not surprise me. Still, Napoleon pulled your country together when it was on the brink of chaos, and he deserves many accolades for that.

Yes, I think Napoléon pulled the country together by giving it an aim.
Remember the the war against other European powers was going on.
The victories following gave the French people the unity they were lacking.
This remember me the move to space in Kennedy's times. This really united people.

A rather good compilation of various articles is to be found on this Dutch site in English: Napoleon Bonaparte - Internet Guide

(Napoleon.org, however, really is the best [I've used it a lot for papers at university ] )

Eva, Francis, Walter--you all have touched on the problem of finding historical accuracy in history books approved by the State (any country).

There is a book published here in the US called Lies My Teacher Told Me. It goes to original sources, letters and other history books to pinpoint inaccuracies and actual lies that are to be found in the history books used to educate children in the US. This is the way it has always been in every country. Thank heaven for people who enjoy researching and talking about history and who cherish truth.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent! The civilized discourse here in the cellar is heavenly. Don't you just love the 'Old' Europeans found in Eva's Wine Cellar? Smooches to Francis and Walterhttp://www.coolsmilies.net/affection/lips.gif---and to the 'old' wines. In vino, veritas.

Now, for some Chambord and a nibble of cheese.

Diane, What you say is so true; even Japan does not teach the children their own history about the atrocities they committed in Asia, and many still refuse to believe factual history. They have not apologized for all these years, and still has the gall to do things that are a direct insult to the Korean and Chinese people even today.
