I seem to recall that Liz Taylor had just recovered from a near-death illness (pneumonia?) and some felt that's why she won for Butterfield 8 - as well as having perhaps deserved the award two years earlier for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

The elderly nominee was Gloria Stuart for Titanic.

Name 4 actresses who were nominated and/or won Oscars for playing hookers. (I thought of six without trying very hard...I'm sure there are tons more...)

How about Elizabeth Taylor (Butterfield8), Julie Christie (McCabe and Mrs. Miller), Jane Fonda (Klute) and -- here's the one I'm reaching for -- Marsha Mason for Cinderella Liberty?

If that's right, please take another question macsm11 as I'm fresh out of Oscar questions.

Thanks for Butterfield8 hint BTW earlier. That got me started in the right direction.

Who was the first woman nominated for Best Director, in the 1970s?

That was in 1976, and a female director wasn't nominated again until the 90's, who was it?

A question on the Best Host poll: why wasn't David Letterman provided as an option? "Uma...Oprah. Oprah...Uma." You're not going to get that sort of comic genius with just anyone.

Mac: Are you looking for Jane Campion for the Piano for the other female director? , the answer I posted earlier.

Hi Equus - Are You looking for Harold Russell for The Best Years of Our Lives? Supporting Actor and special award for bringing hope to veterans. (I know it was in the 40s).
