Equus, none of those ladies are correct answers.

Hint: Of the six occasions when an actress was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Leading Actress the same year, four happened in the last 20 years. In fact, two happened the same year.

I think the answer to your question, Equus, is the Best Silent Film Category.

There were at least three categories that were discarded after the first awards, but I can't remember which was discarded for a good reason. The only one I remember (that was discarded) was for direction of a comedy film.

I think Bridge on the River Kwai won 9.

I'm thinking about the actresses question.

Macsm11 - Good Question. Offhand, I know of two:

1993 - Holly Hunter - Best Actress - The Piano
Best Supporting Actress - The Firm

1994 - Emma Thompson - Best Actress - Remains of the Day
Best Supporting - In the Name of the Father

I'm still thinking.

Equus: An award for Artistic Quality of Production, Comedy Direction, Title Writing ad Engineering Effects was dropped the following year. The fewer the merrier, perhaps.

Good job, Raggedy - Holly Hunter and Emma Thompson are the last two ladies this happened to. There were two others were in the '80s, plus two much earlier.

And I think I was remembering the category about Title Writing when I said Silent Movies... Very Happy

Sorry Booman, didn't mean to leave you out. Still waiting to hear from Equus about that answer; I have no idea what's right... Very Happy

And to clarify, Emma Thompson's double nomination was in 1993, as was Holly Hunter's - they were both nominated for both awards that year.

There were three awards for writing in the first year - Adaptation, Original Story, and Titles. Titles Writing was dropped for good after that. However, I only see one award called "Writing" the next two years, and in the third year, "Writing" is gone, to be replaced by "Adapted Screenplay," and "Original Screenplay." That was the 1930-31 award year.

My guesses for actress with two in one year are Diane Keaton and Vanessa Redgrave, but am still thinking about which films it could be for. I feel stronger about Keaton than Redgrave.

Oh, and the upcoming Awards, Macsm:

Julianne Moore - Best Actress - Far From Heaven
Supporting Actress -The Hours

Now we just need three more. I don't think Ingrid Bergman was nominated in both categories the same year. I don't think Streep or Page was either, but I'm not sure.

My typo Mac. Thompson and Hunter were the same year. Wasn't Julianne Moore nominated twice this year? I can't remember. Laughing You do want the actress to have been nominated in both categories for the same year though, don't you?

Louise Fletcher and Marsha Mason also come to mind.

Not sure, but I don't think mac was including this year's awards nominees. Moore was nominated for both.

I completely forgot about Julianne Moore! Embarrassed

Sigourney Weaver and Jessica Lange were the two from the '80s.

Also, Fay Bainter won for Supporting Actress in Jezebel and was nominated for White Banners in 1938. In 1942, Teresa Wright won Best Supporting Actress for Mrs. Miniver and was also nominated for Leading Actress for The Pride of the Yankees.

I believe it's Raggedy's turn to ask one...

You answered Fay Bainter before I got here, Mac. She was the first. I most humbly ask that someone ask a question for me. I wasn't aware of this thread until this evening and am not prepared. Embarrassed And I must leave now. Sorry and thank you.

Isn't the idea to try to think of it ourselves, not look it up in a book or on IMDb?

Who is the only Nobel laureate to win an Oscar? For which film?
