@maxdancona,
I'm an anomaly. I've long had retinitis pigmentosa, which means I'm "night blind" and have poor peripheral vision not just at night. I'm well used to it, and compensate. Apparently not only people with RP get poor night vision, but some more ordinary people get diminished night vision with age, or so I've read.
Even way before I knew I was different, I used to read in bed because I liked books, so I tended to keep a light on, this from, say, age ten. I've learned over time that I go to sleep better and faster if I read a history book, not a police thriller. I still keep a light on... because if the house catches fire, I can find the bedroom door instead of the closet. This actually happened, the time my neighbor's house caught on fire and several people were pounding on my door while screaming. That was at 4 a.m. Mm, I have a light on at the front door too.
Now I only drink coffee morning or afternoon, but back in the day I would have a full time job, night school, and homework, and would drink coffee, even late. No problem when I finally gave in and went to bed. But that was a gradual acclimatizing. If I had coffee at midnight now, I'd likely spent time staring at the ceiling light, and then find a book.
So? So I think different folks have different solutions for insomnia.
