Become a Morning Person?

Thu 25 May, 2017 03:25 am
I recently started attempted waking up earlier than I'm used to (6AM). This has been incredibly difficult for me. What are some hacks/supplements I can try to make this easier?

@demilovato,
Coffee works for me.

I would also recommend good sleep hygiene; go to bed at the same time every day, make sure youe room is quiet and dark and don't watch TV in bed are the generally accepted rules.

@McGentrix,
Why would anyone want to become a morning person?

Next thing, you'll want to know how to be an extrovert, even worse, the type that's all bubbly and ****.

Within 2 weeks of semi retirement at around 55 years old or so, I went from having the torture of getting up at 5am, just so I could get to work by 8am, to happily staying up until around 2am every night, doing most of my productive stuff between 8pm and midnight.

You got that right! I am a night owl as well. I don't get morning people. That being said, I am finding that in my later years my bladder has shrunk or something because I have about a 5 hour tank now. Used to be a 9 hour tank.

My wife frequently says "Why are you so bloody happy? It's six in the morning!" I love the morning. The day is new, the birds are singing, la la la la, the only problem is my wife coming at me with the scissors.

I'm also a morning person. All work should be done by 10am, me thinks.

One big disaster was going on vacation with a friend who was a night owl. She wanted to start partying about 11 p.m. I went to bed!

She got mad at me when I tried to get her up for a sunrise viewing the next morning.

They day it takes 48 hours to turn yourself around, but I don't believe it.

Kids needing to get fed and off to school is the greatest motivator to becoming a morning person.

I've always been a morning person. Being up and about before the rooster crows or the first sliver of light-of-day appears is wonderful. So peaceful. Then the sunrise! I love watching the sun rise up. It holds a magnificence beyond compare!

Even if I stay up late, I will wake up again about a half hour before the sun starts its morning ascension, been this way from the start.

What do you want to do that you can't do later in the day or at night?

It hasn't kept me from doing what I want.

And, I'm happier doing them.

Right now it's 8am, and I can't believe I'm up this early.

@maxdancona,
I'm an anomaly. I've long had retinitis pigmentosa, which means I'm "night blind" and have poor peripheral vision not just at night. I'm well used to it, and compensate. Apparently not only people with RP get poor night vision, but some more ordinary people get diminished night vision with age, or so I've read.

Even way before I knew I was different, I used to read in bed because I liked books, so I tended to keep a light on, this from, say, age ten. I've learned over time that I go to sleep better and faster if I read a history book, not a police thriller. I still keep a light on... because if the house catches fire, I can find the bedroom door instead of the closet. This actually happened, the time my neighbor's house caught on fire and several people were pounding on my door while screaming. That was at 4 a.m. Mm, I have a light on at the front door too.

Now I only drink coffee morning or afternoon, but back in the day I would have a full time job, night school, and homework, and would drink coffee, even late. No problem when I finally gave in and went to bed. But that was a gradual acclimatizing. If I had coffee at midnight now, I'd likely spent time staring at the ceiling light, and then find a book.

So? So I think different folks have different solutions for insomnia.

I agree Osso. Of course, different things work for different people... these are just suggestions to try.

I have found that having a set bedtime ritual, and making myself go to bed at the same time, is pretty helpful to me in getting up quickly in the morning. But that's just me.

@maxdancona,
Hey, we agree. I do tend to read eye stuff if it shows up in online news, and remember a lot of posts or articles about it being smart to shut off the lights. Probably most americans were raised to do this, and comfortable with doing it, probably with small night lights in the hall, and so on.
