Close up of the Lowan or Mallee fowl
The feathers on the bird provide exemplary camouflage for it in its natural surroundings. Often it cannot be seen when you are fairly close to it, and it becomes noticed only if it moves. The appearance of the feathers was responsible for giving it the Latin name which refers to the eyes it seems to have in its camouflage.
Pairs of birds mate for long periods, although fresh evidence is appearing that sometimes either the male or the female may be involved in serial monogamy.
