Lawmakers Vow To Investigate Police After Capitol Breach

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawmakers are vowing an investigation into how law enforcement handled Wednesday’s violent breach at the Capitol, questioning whether a lack of preparedness allowed a mob to occupy and vandalize the building.

U.S. Capitol Police, who are charged with protecting Congress, turned to other law enforcement for help with the mob that overwhelmed the complex and sent lawmakers into hiding. Both law enforcement and Trump supporters deployed chemical irritants during the hourslong occupation of the complex before it was cleared Wednesday

Four people died, one of them a woman who was shot and killed inside the Capitol. Three other people died after suffering “medical emergencies” related to the breach, said Robert Contee, chief of the city’s Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said 52 people were arrested as of Wednesday night, including 26 on the Capitol grounds. Fourteen police officers were injured, Contee said.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., chairwoman of the House Administration Committee, said the breach “raises grave security concerns,″ adding that her committee will work with House and Senate leaders to review the police response — and its preparedness.

Lawmakers crouched under desks and donned gas masks while police futilely tried to barricade the building when people marched to the Capitol from a rally near the White House in support of President Donald Trump. Washington’s mayor instituted an evening curfew in an attempt to contain the violence.

Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., a former police chief, said it was “painfully obvious” that Capitol police “were not prepared for today. I certainly thought that we would have had a stronger show of force, that there would have been steps taken in the very beginning to make sure that there was a designated area for the protesters in a safe distance from the Capitol.″

In an interview with MSNBC Wednesday night, Demings said it appeared police were woefully understaffed, adding that “it did not seem that they had a clear operational plan to really deal with” thousands of protesters who descended on the Capitol following Trump’s complaints of a “rigged election.″

The rioters were egged on by Trump, who has spent weeks falsely attacking the integrity of the election and had urged his supporters to come to Washington to protest Congress’ formal approval of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. The protests interrupted those proceedings for nearly seven hours.

The mob broke windows, entered both the Senate and House chambers and went into the offices of lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Demings said there were “a lot of unanswered questions and I’m damn determined to get answers to those questions about what went wrong today.″

A police spokeswoman could not immediately be reached for comment late Wednesday.

Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., said she was outraged to see accounts on social media of a Capitol Police officer posing for a photo with a protester. “Would you take a selfie with someone who was robbing a bank?” she asked. “I can’t imagine if a couple of thousand of (Black Lives Matters) protesters had descended on the Capitol ... that there would be 13 people arrested.”

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, suggested there could be leadership changes at the Capitol police.

“I think it’s pretty clear that there’s going to be a number of people who are going to be without employment very, very soon because this is an embarrassment both on behalf of the mob, and the president, and the insurrection, and the attempted coup, but also the lack of professional planning and dealing with what we knew was going to occur,” Ryan said.

@izzythepush,
During the riots, rioters had repeatedly threatened media representatives and destroyed their equipment.
German TV teams were also affected: ZDF, RTL/n-tv and the US news agency AP.

One of the people involved is holding a ZDF microphone. On the channel's "heute journal" programme, correspondent Theveßen explained that he and his team had been surrounded by people he classified as belonging to the extremist milieu. "We were threatened, they started knocking over our equipment, smashing it and we were threateningly told to disappear."

ZDF wrote on Twitter: "Our colleagues were chased away by the demonstrators, but are well. Parts of the equipment were stolen."

It certainly needs a lot of imagination and fantasy to get that Trump is and was a wolf in wolf's clothing.

A Norwegian MP who nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize says awarding the prize to the US president-elect is questionable in light of recent developments in the US.
The nomination was for the peace agreement Trump had reached in the Middle East, Christian Tybring-Gjedde of the right-wing populist Progress Party told Norwegian broadcaster TV2.
After the election defeat, however, Trumps had shown himself to be almost "mentally unstable". Trump should have acknowledged his defeat long ago so that the US could move forward. In view of what is happening now, he considers a price for Trump "very unnatural".

@Walter Hinteler,
For all their unfounded allegations of fraud and a cover up they’re very worried not to be linked to their own actions.

Fact is that Trump did not do this.
Vice President Pence & Nancy Pelosi did. They didn't even consult Trump, because he's a traitor who caused this today.

We have fully activated the D.C. National Guard to assist federal and local law enforcement as they work to peacefully address the situation. We are prepared to provide additional support as necessary and appropriate as requested by local authorities. Our people are sworn to defend the constitution and our democratic form of government and they will act accordingly."

President Trump has demanded that all of these rioters get 10 years in prison. Of course, he's terrible at his job and completely full of hot air (and a whole bunch of bullshit) so none of this will happen.

"Anarchists, agitators, or Protestors who vandalize or damage our Federal Courthouse in Portland, or any Federal Buildings in any of our Cities or States, will be prosecuted under our recently re-enacted Statues & Monuments Act. MINIMUM TEN YEARS IN PRISON. Don’t Do it."

He's not a traitor, and they don't have the ability to take that power away from him.

It does seem possible that Mr. Pence acted without consulting the President however.

Mr. Pence probably did it. However, Nancy Pelosi does not have any such authority.

Mr. Trump is hardly a traitor.

ITV News Journalist Goes Viral, Wins Praise After Extraordinary Report Following Trump Mob Into Capitol

Robert Moore, the Washington correspondent for Britain’s ITV News, has gone viral and won widespread praise from peers for an extraordinary report following Donald Trump’s supporters as they forced their way into the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Moore was in the thick of the carnage on a historic day in the U.S. capital, surfing the mob wave as it battered down the doors and windows of the Capitol building, and calmly reporting on the events as they unfolded around him.

“For four years we have witnessed turmoil in America, but nothing quite like this,” Moore said, as he opened a seven-minute report, in which he captured tear gas canisters being detonated and was jostled by protestors inside the Capitol building. He also filmed protesters wielding shards of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s nameplate after it had been ripped from the wall.

“This is exactly what was feared, but in no way is this a surprise. It has been fueled by the president’s rhetoric, and it’s increasingly clear, this nation has not healed the wounds, it has simply amplified them,” Moore added.

The reporter and his camera operator captured Trump’s supporters chanting “stop the steal” in the corridors of power and was told by one MAGA cap-wearing protester: “They work for us. They don’t get to steal it from us. They don’t get to tell us we didn’t see what we saw.”

The full report, which has racked up 5 million views on Twitter, can be seen here:(at the link)

I hope so, Reg.

Some seemed to be posing...apparently unaware of the number of cameras in the Capitol.

This WAS insurrection. I would love to see some of them have 10 to 20 years to reflect on what Trump did to them.

Morning Joe exec producer Daniel Norwick this morning posted the powerful opening to the MSNBC show, featuring startling images of yesterday’s riot set against the Johnny Cash song Hurt. (Watch it below.)

During this morning’s show, host Joe Scarborough made an impassioned speech about the level of policing during the riot.

“If these insurrectionists were black they would have been shot in the face,” he claimed in raised voice. “And my god, if these insurrectionists were Muslim, they would have been sniped from the top of buildings.”

At one stage his frustration got the better of him and he dropped an F-bomb.

“So, I want to know, from Capitol Hill police, is it just white people, or just Donald Trump supporters? Why do you scream at people for walking three blocks from the Capitol, but then Trump supporters come in and you open the f****** doors for them. You let them breach the people’s house.”

A colleague could be heard gasping when Scarborough drops the F-bomb.

MSNBC and other cable networks are not subject to Federal Communications Commission policies about profanity, but use of the word is still taboo on most networks.

Scarborough later calls for the arrest of President Trump, Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump Jr. for insurrection against the U.S. “If they are not arrested and brought to justice then we are no longer a nation of law, we will only be telling people they can do this again.”

Tensions remain high the day after Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in Washington, interrupting the process of confirming President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory. Four deaths have been reported as a result of the violence so far.
