President Trump has said the losses his business made in the eighties and nineties were "for tax purposes".

He was tweeting in reply to a New York Times (NYT) article claiming that from 1985-95 he made losses of over $1bn.

The newspaper said that Mr Trump's property empire from 1985 "continued to lose money every year, totalling $1.17bn in losses for the decade".

Mr Trump tweeted "You always wanted to show losses... and often re-negotiate with banks, it was sport."

The NYT said that while Mr Trump has always described himself as a successful property tycoon he was for at least a decade during the eighties and nineties making huge losses on his core businesses, largely casinos, hotels and retail space in apartment buildings.

It wrote: "Year after year, Mr Trump appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer, The Times found when it compared his results with detailed information the [Internal Revenue Service or I.R.S.] compiles on an annual sampling of high-income earners.

"His core business losses in 1990 and 1991 — more than $250m each year — were more than double those of the nearest taxpayers in the I.R.S. information for those years."

"Overall, Mr Trump lost so much money that he was able to avoid paying income taxes for eight of the 10 years."

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, has had enough of Democrats targeting Attorney General William Barr, describing what he considers a nonsensical campaign to place the head of the Justice Department in contempt of Congress.

Gohmert told his colleagues that the true scandal is the Obama intelligence apparatus’ “attempted coup” against President Trump.

“We’ve never had the Intelligence Community, the FBI, people at the top of the DOJ abusing their powers to create a case against a president where there was none. Where assets were actually used to try to set up members of the Trump campaign when there was no case. To try to create a case. We ought to be all over that. We ought to be demanding answers,” Gohmert said.

“This was an attempted coup, and history is bringing that into focus more and more clearly,” he added. “And what does this committee do about the abuses, the attempted coup? It comes in and decides, ‘We’re going to go after the attorney general who’s trying to clean up the mess.’”

It is long, long past time for Americans to stop facilitating such evil.

Career diplomats and members of the national security establishment bemoan a career State Department official being brought down by this kind of Trump family mafia claptrap and agitprop. They’re absolutely right to do so. But perverting the US criminal justice system and trying to goad foreign friends into targeted the President’s domestic political enemies is a far bigger deal.
