WASHINGTON — As a senator more than two decades ago, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. argued that President George Bush should delay filling a Supreme Court vacancy, should one arise, until the presidential election was over, and that it was “essential” that the Senate refuse to confirm a nominee to the court until then.

That is what happened to Garland.

@Walter Hinteler,
From your own link...

Trump is thought to have made his frontier recommendation when Borrell accompanied King Felipe and Queen Letizia to the White House in June.

So nobody knows when, or if, he actually said this?

@Baldimo,
I mean before the election, you know. like I posted.

I'd want the Democrats to do the same if the roles were reversed. I'd also want them to release all the information on a nominee though too.

I'm just positive that what you're saying would have made ALL the difference to you.

If this was released 2 weeks ago then this woman would be completely credible and you'd have no problem believing her.

@maporsche,
So you don't want him to appoint a new justice till after the elections?
Which elections, the midterms or the presidential election season?

You know that the day after the midterms, all potential candidates go into election mode for the presidential elections.
And as soon as the presidential election is over the campaigning for the mid term elections begins.

So, when exactly would you have the president pick a USSC nominee?

When you look through through the Spanish press of the last days, Borrell didn't say when it happened. But it has been guessed that it was in June.

@mysteryman841,
I oppose Kavanaugh as a SCOTUS justice, so I'd LOVE personally if he were postponed forever.

McConnell made things messy in this regard....

No, but if it had been brought up during the committee hearings it could have been addressed, investigated, and Justice Kavanaugh could have defended himself.

Don't forget, one of the basic tenets of our legal system is the right to face your accuser.

This woman is saying she wont testify, so how is that fair?

@mysteryman841,
I have ZERO doubt that the timing of release was done for political reasons (to some degree).

Kavanaugh can still do all of those things. He can fly back to Washington and sit down and face the Senate again. Who's stopping him?

That is what Joe Biden said about delaying and postponing a POTUS picks for supreme court.

So, McConnell was only doing what Joe Biden argued in favor of doing.

Kavanaugh is reaping what McConnell sowed. Great memes coming out of McConnell's statements re nominations during the last year of a presidency.

You must understand the difference.

@maporsche,
At least you are willing to admit to purely partisan motives.

In the court of law, sure (although even then often I think the witnesses testify without the accused in the room, given the trauma).

This is public opinion. He can defend himself publicly from the allegations, as they are now public.

To leave open the possibility that there were other reasons to postpone the release until last week.

Even if there were other reasons though, part of the thought process would have had to be political (I believe).

I'm not prescribing any motives to Congress...I'm stating my personal preferences (I even used the word "personally").

I would not be surprised if it were purely gamemanship though, as so much of government is.

I'd support a law that said something along the lines of:

Any nominee that a President picks for a job that requires Senate confirmation must be considered within 90 days.

There'd probably have to be some clauses to make sure that people release documents and such, but generally, I think this would be a good rule/law.
