How cheap and dishonest. You remind me of the Houston chapter of the conservative John Birch Society, who falsely accused my sister of being a Communist in the early 1960s when she was a college student. Her "offense" was that she and a sorority sister had launched a petition addressed to the national headquarters urging them to drop their racist bylaws which excluded blacks and Jews. She also had participated in a peaceful demonstration against the "whites only" hiring practices of the largest employer in the town. The truth is she's always been too liberal to be a Communist. Of course, the JBS believed that the civil rights movement was a plot hatched in the Kremlin.

By the way, in the early 1970s she would call my attention to an interesting biography entitled The Confession written by Artur (correct spelling) London, a former Czechoslovak Communist who had served as a Deputy Foreign Minister in the Stalinist regime of Klement Gottvald. He was eventually abducted by the secret police and underwent torture to make him compliant as one of the defendants in the notorious Slansky trial. So, I guess my sister wasn't much of a Communist after all.

@wmwcjr,
You have an insight into a reality that too few people have. If you ever discussed the former USSR with high level defectors they could tell you stories that would curl your hair. I'm sorry your sister was targeted, the John Birch Society is a despicable organization that attracts racists, anti=semites and other bottom feeders. Try to ignore those folks who banty about terms they don't understand.

Years ago, I was on assignment in a Communist Country in Eastern Europe. It was a short time appointment but the atmosphere was incredibly oppressive. I've described it before, and even though I thought I had a fair idea what it would be like, there was something in the air that was the polar opposite of this country. I didn't breath easily until my plane left country airspace. The Russians don't live with the same sense of freedom we do, neither do the Chinese, the North Koreans or many countries in Africa or the Middle East. e need to be vigilant because we never want to give up our freedom.

@glitterbag,
I've been to China and Russia a couple of times, and we were told before the trip not to talk about politics. However, in China, our local Tour Director said we can ask him any question, because the majority of Chinese do not understand English. In Russia, none of us talked about politics, but we didn't need to. We could almost feel the stifling atmosphere. When we were by the Kremlin, Putin's car was driving past our group, and we were told not to look at the cars.
When you can't even look around freely, because the head of state is passing by in his car, that speaks volumes about the control the government has on its people.

@cicerone imposter,
From the New Yorker.
Quote:
As has been amply documented, Trump’s relationship to the truth is on par with his relationships with women—opportunistic and abusive. Daniel Dale, a Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star, who since mid-September has been publishing a more or less daily tally of Trump’s false claims, recently called the Republican candidate’s campaign rhetoric a veritable “avalanche of wrongness.” The Washington Post/ABC News pollsters were out in the field for two days, October 30th and 31st. On those days, Dale counted twenty-seven and nineteen Trump falsehoods, respectively. These ranged from the offhand (a misstatement about Frank Sinatra) to the egregious (fabrications about Clinton’s tax plan, about her immigration policies, and about the history of ISIS). The most falsehoods Trump uttered in one day, according to Dale, is thirty-seven, a height he reached on October 20th and then again on October 24th.

Instead of “avalanche of wrongness," why didn't they use "avalanche of lies?"

@cicerone imposter,
It's difficult to imagine how oppressive some countries are. Russia is sliding back to its traditional ways, completely authoritarian. Hungary seems to be missing having a strong man, and we've been foolish thinking that countries that survived suffocating oppression can really handle self governing.

I'm not surprised about your experience in Russia, Putin's motorcade is notorious for ripping around Moscow terrorizing the pedestrians. I hope our fellow citizens never have to cower in the face of such malignant power.

@glitterbag,
Also been to Budapest a couple of times, but felt free to do what's allowed in most western countries. Once on a land tour, and the second time on a river cruise. Walked alone all over Buda and Pest, and got to know the city pretty well. Still remember seeing a huge picture of Frank Sinatra on a building by the river. Visited MemorialSquare on both visits, and took pictures.

I for one would like to know what tRump the crook is hiding in his income tax returns. He admitted long ago there was something in them that would hurt him but the stupid conservatives just ignore anything that might hurt their hero. Like CI says you cant cure stupid.

The danger, of course, is that authoritarian figures can demand levels of deference which are totally inappropriate in a democracy.

I would like to think that after a year or so of tRumps BS that may change. Even a media trained to bow before a Oligarch can get tired of constant lying BS.

I love it when the dumb asses on this site revert to insults like that. It means they dont have a rational come back so have to resort to invective.

You crack me up, kid.

Quote:
Sydneysiders have endured their fourth day of traffic chaos in a week, as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and city streets were cleared to give US Vice-President Dick Cheney a clear ride.

All lanes on the bridge and the harbour below were cleared to allow Mr Cheney's motorcade to travel to Prime Minister John Howard's residence Kirribilli House, on the city's north shore.

The massive security operation caused heavy delays around the bridge and Mr Cheney's hotel in The Rocks.

And the purpose of this visit? To strong-arm our PM into "staying the distance" in Iraq. How'd that pan out for everyone? And tricky dicky was so ****-scared of us, he wasn't even in the motorcade of 30 effing vehicles. Must really trust his people, right?

@Builder,
Putin is in Russia all the time, its not like when a war criminal like Cheney shows up unfortunately in your country.
If I was an Australian I would have protested that Cheney even be allowed in the country. You are mot the USA, you didn't have to allow him to visit.

@glitterbag,
He's your dick.You prosecute him.

Australians voted almost unanimously to NOT go to Iraq on fabricated evidence.

That's on the record.

This is how a true leader rides the streets. Not hiding like a cretin.

@Builder,
Cheney is one of the most despised people in this country. Go stuff your head in a bucket, i didn't vote for that sheathed, and since the Supreme Court was responsible for anointing Bush and his cretin vice president, it's moot what the American people wanted or actually voted for.

So you found a scapegoat?

The SCOTUS is the problem?

Wash hands of the problem? Just like that?

How very convenient.
