A court has barred sales in Mexico of a controversial Frida Kahlo Barbie doll, ruling that members of her family own the sole rights to her image.

The toy company Mattel launched a range of new Barbie dolls based on "inspiring women" - artist Frida Kahlo among them.

But some of Kahlo's relatives said the manufacturer had used the painter's image without permission.

Her great-niece, Mara Romeo, told AFP news agency that the doll's complexion was too light.

"I would have liked the doll to have traits more like Frida's, not this doll with light-coloured eyes," she said.

After the decision was made, Mrs Romeo told AFP she was "thrilled" and thought justice was "finally being done".

"It should have been a much more Mexican doll," she said, "with darker skin, a unibrow, not so thin because Frida was not that thin... dressed in more Mexican clothing, with Mexican jewellery."

Kahlo was widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century, famed for her intimate self-portraits reflecting pain and isolation.

The court's ruling only applies in Mexico and may be appealed, although lawyers for Mattel have not yet commented.

The family told AFP they hope to launch similar action in the US.

Frida Kahlo, who lived from 1907 to 1954, was a member of Mexico's Communist Party in her youth and proudly promoted indigenous Mexican culture through her art.

She also challenged the gender norms of her time by wearing trousers and having relationships with other women as well as with men. Her work also chronicled her painful relationship with her body, disabled through spina bifida, polio and a bus accident.

Her physical disabilities were not represented in the Barbie doll.

US President Donald Trump will not attend the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush on Saturday.

The White House said Mr Trump was missing the event "to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush Family".

Melania Trump will however go to the funeral "on behalf of the First Family", according to the statement.

The former first lady's coffin is being kept at St Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas.

President Trump called Mrs Bush a "wonderful, wonderful person" at a news conference on Wednesday.

"She was a woman of proud patriotism and profound faith," Mr Trump said at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

Donald Trump has had a difficult relationship with the Bush family, most significantly in his run against Jeb Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

Both former Bush presidents have clashed with the president.

In a book titled The Last Republicans, Bush Snr labelled Mr Trump a "blowhard", while Bush Jnr said: "This guy doesn't know what it means to be president."

Lobbyist whose wife rented to Pruitt lobbied EPA despite denials

The prominent lobbyist whose wife rented a condominium to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt lobbied the agency while Pruitt was leading it, contrary to his and Pruitt’s public denials that he had any business before the agency, according to a Friday filing by his firm.

The disclosure from the lobbying firm Williams & Jensen contradicts Pruitt's public statement last month that the lobbyist, J. Steven Hart, had no clients with business before the EPA, and comes hours after Hart’s resignation from the firm.

St. Louis prosecutors filed criminal charges against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens on Friday over his handling of a donors list for his veterans charity, the newest controversy for the governor, who is facing separate allegations of blackmail and sexual assault and a felony charge alleging invasion of privacy.

Missouri’s attorney general, Josh Hawley, announced on Friday that St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner had found probable cause to file criminal charges against the governor in the case. Prosecutors allege that Greitens improperly used the donor list for his charity organization, The Mission Continues, during his 2016 political campaign.

The Beverly Hills lawyer who represented two women who were paid in 2016 to keep quiet about their alleged affairs with Donald J. Trump has been drawn into the federal investigation focused on Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s longtime lawyer and fixer.

That lawyer, Keith M. Davidson — who finalized another legal agreement with Mr. Cohen in recent months — was contacted by federal authorities in the wake of this month’s raid on Mr. Cohen’s Manhattan office and has shared records with investigators, a spokesman said.

“Mr. Davidson has been contacted by the federal authorities regarding the Michael Cohen probe in the Southern District of New York,” the spokesman, Dave Wedge, said on Friday. “Mr. Davidson was asked to provide certain limited electronic information. He has done so and will continue to cooperate to the fullest extent possible under the law.”

Natalie Portman, the Oscar-winning actress, has backed out of a major award ceremony meant to honor her in Jerusalem, with her representatives citing her distress over “recent events” in Israel.
