A top fundraiser for President Donald Trump received millions of dollars from a political adviser to the United Arab Emirates last April, just weeks before he began handing out a series of large political donations to U.S. lawmakers considering legislation targeting Qatar, the UAE's chief rival in the Persian Gulf, an Associated Press investigation has found.

George Nader, an adviser to the UAE who is now a witness in the U.S. special counsel investigation into foreign meddling in American politics, wired $2.5 million to the Trump fundraiser, Elliott Broidy, through a company in Canada, according to two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. They said Nader paid the money to Broidy to bankroll an effort to persuade the U.S. to take a hard line against Qatar, a long-time American ally but now a bitter adversary of the UAE.

The oldest gun manufacturer in the US, Remington Outdoor, has filed for bankruptcy in the wake of slumping sales.

The firm, founded more than 200 years ago, filed for bankruptcy protection to cut a deal with its creditors.

Remington's chief financial officer said the company's sales dropped significantly in the year before its bankruptcy, court papers show.

The filing comes amid fresh demands for greater gun control in the US.

A shooting at a Florida high school in February has revived the debate on gun control, and on Saturday tens of thousands of young Americans took part in protests.

As a result of public pressure, some US retailers have attempted to restrict firearm sales, with some requiring background checks and others halting the sale of firearms in their stores.

In anticipation of a Hillary Clinton presidency, some weapons manufacturers had increased production, expecting greater sales from Americans fearing increased gun control.

Remington, best known for its rifles and shotguns, was founded in 1816.

After it emerged a Remington rifle was used in the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting, victims' family members filed a lawsuit against the gunmaker.

In court papers filed in Delaware, Remington's chief financial officer, Stephen Jackson, said the company was having difficulty meeting requirements from its lenders as a result of declining sales.

During the bankruptcy process, the company will stay in business.

In most US Chapter 11 bankruptcy processes, the debtor proposes a reorganisation plan to maintain its business and pay creditors over a period of time.

Last week, I wrote here that there was no good reason to assume Trump has any personal or ideological motive to the military transgender ban and that this move would likely have come from Pence.

@blatham,

I have long been skeptical that there will be any big gun policy reforms in the US. After federal lawmakers failed to take any significant action following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut — in which 6- and 7-year-olds were killed — I saw little reason for hope. While I remain cautious, comments like Hogg’s gave me a twinkle of optimism.

Gun control is, broadly speaking, incredibly popular in America. Polling for many common gun control measures, including universal background checks, can top 75 percent — even among Republicans.

But for years these policies have failed to get anywhere because of a key problem: issue intensity. Essentially, lots of Americans support gun control, but it’s not really their top priority when they go out to vote. Meanwhile, those who oppose stricter gun laws are simply more likely to make it the one issue they’ll vote on.

Not sure we're recognizing what these #MSDStrong students have done.
800k in Washington DC today alone. The largest anti-Vietnam War demonstration in '69 drew 500k.
And they organized it in five weeks. While grieving.

@izzythepush,
I just read a lawyer's description of how this bankruptcy maneuver is one previously used by Colt (and many other non-weapons corporations such as Dow) to insulate themselves from potentially catastrophic victim damage suits. Once the process is completed, those corps are right back at what they were doing before.

I think that's exactly right. And this isn't the only issue where the same dynamics apply, eg abortion. And this is why the widespread reaction to the Florida mass killing is so encouraging.

This is a continuing problem with reproductive rights as well. We need to develop a wedge issue which divides the gunbunnies and the evangelicals. What about arming fetuses? A firearm could protect a fetus in the event that it were being aborted. And a fetus could even shoot its host under a version of the "stand your ground" law if it learned that it was to be terminated.

Though I'm not interested in doing the necessary research to support this, I think it is possible that at one point in the distant past, Trump's chin and his neck were two separate things.

This is currently a big talking point with Trump supporters and NRA goons.
Quote:
Skeptics of the marches seized on the roles of major interest groups, suggesting that the students were unwitting participants in political warfare that should be reserved for adults. But organizers and supporters of Saturday’s events have done little to disguise that millions of dollars and thousands of hours were directed toward the weekend’s protests.

In Gun Control Marches, Students Led but Adults Provided Key Resources

Do you really think the marches would have happened without the participation of the students?
