Yeah, John...
Quote:
It all happened in 1904, when the 64-year-old Perdicaris and his stepson found themselves taken hostage from their villa in Tangier, Morocco by a scruffy band of rifle-toting Berber tribesmen on horseback.

The bandits' chieftain was flamboyant, black-bearded Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli, and he wanted to extort a heavy ransom from the Sultan of Morocco...

"Preposterous," said Roosevelt's Secretary of State, John Hay, responding to the ransom demands.

Seven battleships from the Atlantic fleet were dispatched to the Moroccan coast.

It also gave Roosevelt the chance to issue one of his most blood-curdling proclamations, a statement that helped ensure his re-election while sending Americans wild with joy:

"Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!"

All true. The story was made into a favorite film (of mine) in the 1970's, called "The Wind and the Lion" . Pedicaris was turned into a woman, (played by Candice Bergin) and Sean Connery played a Moroccan Arab with a Scottish brogue, as Raisuli. A bit tongue in cheek, and with many great lines: also somewhat prescient in terms of what followed.

A central theme was the underlying similarity of the characters of Teddy Roosevelt and Raisuli.

@cicerone imposter,
What's with all the post-mortem results, CI?

The press drilled us with all this stuff, and it made no difference in the end.

The corruption within the DNC cooked her goose. End that, if you want a better end to the story.

@maporsche,
I guess what I am saying is Abby from NCIS is not going to be making me brown rice, living in my neighborhood, making the same money as me, dealing with the after effects of BLM like me, etc.

Personally I don't give her a plus 10 on brown rice expertise because she is cute on TV. I don't get why people do.

@cicerone imposter,
Are you implying that no criminals come to the US to commit crimes? Are you implying that there is no illegal drug smuggling between the US and Mexico? No one from Mexico has ever raped someone here in the US? Illegal immigrants from Mexico come here and commit no crimes? How many times have some illegal immigrants been deported only to pop up again in the US committing another crime?

People aren't using Streep's speech to prove points in research papers or as evidence of anything Tony. No one is assigning her any expertise in anything.

People want to hear celebrities talk. This is why we have shows like Celebrity Apprentice and whatever the Kardashian show is. It's why we have award shows where people give televised speeches.

Streep talked, some people loved it, some people want a safe space from it.

I'm finding you looking for one now. It must be hard to hear mean actresses say things about Trump when you're trying to enjoy the Golden Globes. Maybe Trump can get you a safe space for the GG and for Broadway because of what happened with Pence.

Figures you turn it around when no idea what you are talking about. If I wanted a safe space from different views, I wouldn't have been on this site for the last 12 years...

It wasn't hard at all, I wasn't watching. I'm not enthralled with Hollywood like the Dems and the rest of the mindless masses. Watching Hollywood patting themselves on the back isn't my cup of tea.

Funny how I picked on the leftist pansies, and you turn it into a personal attack against me. What's wrong, did the truth of liberal safe spaces hit a little to close to home?

You say this after the "thumbs down/thumbs up" debacle that had to be fixed on the site? Wasn't there a point in time here, when people who were right of center had a minimum of 10 down votes to their post they would make? If this also coming from the same person who advocates "ignoring" people they don't agree with for the simple reason that they don't agree?

How big a hypocrite can you be?

10? I had over 100 on just one post when in the thread "what made you smile today" I said, "Trump being elected." I believe that's an A2K record.

@Baldimo,
I'm glad you are strong enough Baldimo. Your chosen President Trump is much less of an adult than you are. He needs protection from Streep and other people who have big twitter followings and/or national platforms.

@maporsche,
Stuff happens on Jerry Springer. Some people love it, some people want a safe space from it. Personally I think star wars and Lord of the Rings are both very good movies. The Matrix is pretty good too. The first Saw was pretty good ( talk about needing a safe space), but the other one's were just kind of the same thing as the first one.

I wonder if Harry Potter would like Hillary Clinton. Maybe Star Fox would. If Harry Potter was a Clinton fan, and Star Fox was a Trump fan, and they got in a fight, who do you think would win?

If Stars Fox won would you need a safe space?

Do you remember the scorn the liberals unleashed on "Joe the Plumber"?

I remember that. I don't remember all the details..but you are correct, someone shouldn't be pilloried because they have an opinion, probably should be that their opinion should be scrutinized for reasons for its veracity..

More than likely she rejoiced in a regular person being put in their place, how dare the peasant have an opinion that differs from the Hollywood elite who have no forum to project their opinions...

Tell me that there are not Thousands if illegals who have brought crime here or have raped here...Then find for me in that quote where trump said ALL illegals were criminals and rapist's..You should be ashamed for purposely lying.

Who's chosen President? I didn't vote for Trump. I don't know how many times I have mentioned this, but you always seem to get this wrong. Does it help you try to prove some sort of point? It makes you look foolish to be corrected every time you mention it.

It shows that Hollywood is a bunch of out of touch elitists. This is the same woman who gave a pedophile a standing ovation in 2003. She has no moral ground.

It's true that the guy he "mocked" had a handicap, but that's not what he was "mocking."

Putting aside whether or not Trump knew he was handicap or not, his actions are what I would consider immature. Perhaps you disagree? Maybe you think its ok to mock someone in the way that he did regardless of his physical status? Or better put, is this action no reason for concern or pause in choosing someone for the nations highest office? I saw the video and to me, Trump, during his apoplectic fit, looks, talks and acts like a 12 year old.

And denigrating Streep's acting ability? He may disagree with her characterization of himself, fair enough, but then to say she's overrated? What does that mean? What next? A Shaq attack on him and then: "Shaq's height is overrated!

I can see the 'rescue': that's just Trump's real opinion about Streep. Then its funny that his real opinions often come and relate with the attitude of the person sending him a message..

There's some extraordinary stupid in a bunch of the posts written today re Streep and her comments.

"Why do people attend to celebrities?"
This is a very American (not just) social feature. There are how many profitable magazines and web sites that rely on this aspect of US culture. Trump's show is "Celebrity Apprentice", is it not? He's playing the same game, isn't he? He has himself photographed with celebrities regularly and uses his relationships with celebrities to bolster his own status, does he not? And for the love of god, have the integrity to admit the reality that Trump bragged about his level of celebrity as being the precise reason he could just "grab them by the pussy"

"Actors (or other artists) are merely specialists in some non-political sphere thus have no credible voice re politics"
Each one is a citizen. of the nation or of the world community. Each has the right or duty to speak to political issues just the same as anyone in a street interview or in a Luntz panel or on A2K. Their career is irrelevant. One poster earlier suggested that credible political voices came from political writers and reporters and the chances anybody here on the right will sign on to that one is near zero.

"Actors/artists are celebrities who hold an elevated status in affinity and respect thus their voices have an inappropriate grip or influence on others"
As I said earlier, that's true. As I also said, it's why Reagan and Arnold had electoral advantages over others. It's why Romney brought Eastwood up on stage. It's why the NRA used Heston as a front-man. It's why Trump was photographed with Kanye West. Why Trump and Conway and the rest of you here on the right protest this example is because it works in opposition to your partisan preference.

"Hollywood is a land of lefties and spoiled, immoral pagans"
This is an old means of derogating voices and persons in the film (or recording) industries. We know the history here of McCarthy. And of the sexuality moral scolds from the religious right who saw (and still see) portrayals of murder, torture and cruelty less offensive than a woman's nipples or someone using the word "****". Echoes of this history still bounce around in the right wing mind, speech and literature.

That's not just insane, it's utterly ridiculous in this case as Trump has lived exactly that sort of life and has always bragged loudly about it.

Are you folks on the right so far gone that you'll accept and justify this statement from Conway?
Quote:
CNN and other media outlets should judge Donald Trump based on “what’s in his heart” rather than “what’s come out of his mouth,” incoming counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway said Monday morning,
LINK

We should trust Conway, a hired PR agent for Trump (who has her own record of lies and deceits) to tell us the real truth about Donald Trump's "heart" and ignore all that he himself has said, written and done that stands in profound contrast to her claim about him?

And this is not the sort of case where an individual says one thing or commits one act which is far out of the ordinary for him/her. It isn't a singular incident in an otherwise life or career of kindness, caring and personal integrity. This is years of countless such instances from Trump. Instances of a sort we've never seen anything remotely similar in a candidate or (god help us) an incoming President.

If you guys are prepared to swallow this statement or to justify and accept it as an honest statement, then it becomes very difficult to imagine you have any limits at all in how far down the road to authoritarianism and proto-dictatorship you're willing to go.

Perhaps the governing limit here is your imagination.

After all we've had a very large dose of authoritarinism at the hands of Obama, political thugs like Harry Reid, daffy lightweights like John Kerry, the band of largely inept progressive "experts" who write their scripts for them, and, of course, the grammarians of political correctitude who accompany them and make such efforts to teach us all to speak and think correctly..
