A US gym teacher is facing child abuse and assault charges after allegedly forcing a student to stand for the US Pledge of Allegiance.

The Boulder Valley School District in Colorado confirmed Karen Smith had been placed on paid administrative leave.

Police were called to Angevine Middle School after the alleged incident on 1 February.

Local school officials say students can sit or stand during the pledge. Federal law permits students to sit.

The school district released a statement to parents after the arrest saying they "are co-operating with the District Attorney's Office and respect their decision on this matter".

"We are unable to comment further because it remains a personnel matter that the school district is actively investigating."

Lafayette police say Ms Smith - described as a teacher with 20 years' experience - grabbed the boy by the jacket, lifted him to his feet and dragged him out of the class.

She is charged with child abuse - recklessly and with injury - and third-degree assault.

Parents dropping off their children at school the next day told a local news channel that the teacher was known for being "strict".

Several parents told CBS Denver they believe the story had been "blown out of proportion".

In the 1943 West Virginia State Board of Education v Barnette Supreme Court decision, judges ruled that public school students cannot be compelled to stand during the pledge.

AMERICA FIRST!

Well, except, of course . . .

Three Trump properties posted 144 openings for seasonal jobs. Only one went to a US worker.

@izzythepush,
How could that story been blown out of proportion? I haven't heard the story the before reading here from you. I mean, she grabbed him by his jacket and dragged him out of class. No matter the reason for it, it was clearly wrong. Moreover, in this case, the teacher was wrong on the merits.

@oralloy,
Yep, I was right. Oralloy went into his usual rant. Statistically speaking, about a million people will die from gun violence over the course of his lifetime. And he maintains over and over again that there is "no reason" to do anything about this ultimate violation of their civil rights. That is sociopathic.

@izzythepush,
Amazing that people can be such ******* idiots. Some people actually think they have the right to put their hands on someone else when they don’t act to their preference. I hope she’s sued down to her underwear.

Obama had eight years to make a decent registry happen. Just keeping guns out of crazy or violent hands would diminish shooting exponentially.

Why didn’t Obama do something?

Why do you expect Republicans to do more than you expected of Obama?

@MontereyJack,
Ialways like to see how oralloy has "evolved" in his thinking. Its just as paleo as ever and I still wonder how his beliefs are working for us>

We lead the first world in numbers of annual gun deaths and yet I see no evidence of any theories all these extreme gun libertarians can vocalize about how we can become more civilized.

The problems with his style of thinking is that it requires an :us" v "them" mindset. That, through history has never worked. AS long as the NRA has these folks in its grasp, e will probably have to accept this norm of several mass shootings per year until we are inured to such occurences and the nation either splits apart or we wind up with some regime based on total gun control. Im afraid the gun nuts havent yet figured it out qhere we go to from here. I dont see us becoming a Canada wherein sports guns and home defense are still valid but the crazy laws that allow mega multiple gun purchases , or dont allow stats from gun deaths to b compiled by theCDC, or that "bump stocks" hvent been addressed at all, even after the horrendous Las Vegas shooting.
It appears, from where I sit, the party in control qears the responsibility for uch crime and by not doing ANYTHING, mrely create a dam of opinion against them that will, urely break and our rights will be curtailed by overcorrection.

We've discussed this. There's also this thing about having Republicans in control of either the House, the Senate, or both for 6 years. You know, little things.

Republicans in congress have 95% opposition to common sense gun control measures. Democrats have maybe 5% opposition.

Can you spot the difference there Lash?

That's a totally rhetorical question, I suppose.

@Lash,

Because he was not issued dictatorial powers.

Because they have a majority in both houses of Congress and control the executive branch of the government. There have been thirty attempted/successful mass shootings since New Year's so, being in control, they could actually address some aspects of the problem. Who else is going to do it?

@BillW,
As bad as CU was/is, I don't see it as causal here. But that's a bigger conversation than I want to have right now. Apparently, at some point last night, a beer delivery vehicle ran over my brain.

@Setanta,
Quite surprising to see Trump do the reverse of what he says simply out of greed. That's not like him.

From the report: EPA's Scott Pruitt flies 1st class to talk Superfund in NH
Quote:
Tom Irwin, vice president and New Hampshire director of the Conservation Law Foundation, said the Obama and Trump administrations differ on how they view science.

“I think it’s fair to say the current administration in many ways is outright abandoning science,” Irwin said.
