As much as they understood human nature and the possible venality of politicians, I don't think they imagined a Congress taking advantage of the wiggle room they've been provided to stage a coup for partisan reasons alone.

Like Whitewater?

I think it's way too early to be planning the impeachment of Mr. Trump. If something is discovered during the investigation which really implicates the president in truly questionable activities, enough to cause moderate Republicans to peel off, then you'll see the forces for impeachment catalyze.

Let's say that conflicts of interest are discovered, along with questionable dealings with Russia, and exposure of an extensive record of lying. I think the old man would resign and just work to pump up the tattered remains of his "movement" rather than face a trial.

The Donald never admits defeat. That is what Roy Cohn taught him. The same slimy Roy Cohn who was a McCarthy acolyte.

How many posts do you need to read saying America is not a democracy?

Those posts have been a feature here for at least 4 or 5 years, with a big surge about 2 years ago.

I understand that complaint/observation isn't original. But two things: first, your initial sentence, as least as you've worded it, is too absolute and second, I think it is worthwhile and necessary to be specific regarding how democracy is being damaged and who is doing it.

We need to move on a little from the Russian angle and start paying attention to what else is happening.
For the most part, I quite agree. But also I don't want reporting to ignore Trump as relates to the broadening Russia investigation as another means of encouraging civic conscience in the population. There seems to me no question that Trump's constant attacks on civil and political norms is a/the key factor in present citizen engagement.

@hightor,
Im waay more interested in his entire ignoring of the "Pinkney Clause" of the US Constitution , (which, s I understand, is only applicable to the Executive and the Judicial branches).
I need a Constitutional lawyer to explain that one.

The Pinkney Clause ( re:"Emoluments") will force Trump to reveal his tax records . There was a big deal in this mornings Balto Sun.

He's right. Podhoretz is definitely not my favorite dude. As it happens, he's the only individual on twitter who has blocked me. We got in a fight about 7 years ago and he obviously holds grudges.

#45's tweets came into play

he produces the most amazing, best, extraordinary evidence

It's an amazing thing. The nature of his psychopathy does not permit him to behave in any manner which suggests he has previously be in error. "Digging his own grave" has never had a better exemplar than this sick cookie.

@blatham,
Hopefully we can be spared a drawn out impeachment......Trump is simply unfit for office and his party should put a stop to this nonsense if they hope to be regarded as supporters of the constitution and democracy. If they can't, then just admit they want to create a monarchy in which the citizens are only here to worship Donald Trump. It's really more like a cult. Trump is an absolute disaster and profound embarrassment.

This SCOTUS (if they end up getting the case) will probably rule in Cheetolini's favor [on the travel ban], don'tcha think?
Actually, I doubt that very much. It's possible Alito, Thomas and Roberts would like to rule in his favor but they are constrained by all the prior rulings and by the arguments made - based on Trump's tweets - that there's a constitutional violation here. I do think Roberts cares not merely about law but also about the reputation of the SC. They know that Bush v Gore did real damage to that reputation. I'm not sure if the SC will address just one or cumulative prior decisions but my guess is they'll let the earlier decision hold sway.

In this climate, impeachment would be very ugly (almost no matter what the circumstances). But I've almost given up on the GOP behaving responsibly and working to publicly rid themselves of the guy. I don't know how this plays out. But I plan on drinking some Becks and smoking some quality weed tonight so the answer may come to me. I'll keep you posted.

Based on Trumps tweets... Courts ruling on EO/EA's due to what is said on social media. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

The right wing cadre is now going after Mueller. Well of course they are. It's how they roll. Note the dates on these two tweets:
Quote:
Newt Gingrich ✔ @newtgingrich
Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down
5:17 PM - 17 May 2017

Newt Gingrich ✔ @newtgingrich
Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. Look who he is hiring.check fec reports. Time to rethink.

@Baldimo,
Why should they be ashamed? According to Spicer, the President's tweets is how he makes announcements.

Sean Spicer just settled it: We should all pay attention to Trump’s tweets (WP)

Quote:
“The president is the president of the United States, so they are considered official statements by the president of the United States,” he said in response to a reporter's question.

Here's a photo that heads up a TPM piece on Republicans not releasing their Obamacare repeal bill before it goes to the CBO or even before a vote on the bill. I'm not sure when this photo was taken but regardless, there's something here worth attending to.

https://dawm7kda6y2v0.cloudfront.net/uploads/2017/02/piejqwmkbjcqs0apd7aj-654x362-7f72dd0.jpg

Why all those bodies? Whatever is being said could be said by the turtleman himself.

This is so common that it almost never gains comment (and both parties do it). Why do they do it? It's a form of stagecraft and presentation which has the intention of communicating consensus and solidarity. Allies ought to feel comforted and the opposition ought to feel intimidated. It's the difference between one Hells Angels dude riding into town versus twenty of them in a group. It plays to some very basic and mostly unconscious responses in the human/primate brain. And frankly I have the urge to vomit every time I see it.

Me too. If I bump into some commentary from the folks like Greenhouse and Lithwick (who really know the SC) I'll let you know.
