D'art, I'm not rubbing anybody's nose in anything. Not my idea of a sports person. If the Yankees win, I'm happy. If they lose, I'm disappointed. And if they lose, it's because the other team played better. SImple as that.
I didn't mean you, Roberta. My own brother is an NYY fan, but he's gracious about it, too. It's the sense of entitlement that I hear that gets me going...
You're right Kicky, something about those two words:Yankees-October.
Good point about Stein B. flyboy
Roberta, you and edgar are in the classy section of Yankee rooters
Thanks D'art and Pan, I'm not speaking for Edgar, but I'm from a different era--one from a long time ago. Nobody badmouthed an opponent. NOBODY. Nobody bragged--at least not publicly. I don't like the changes I've seen. They make me sad. Not a good way to be. For grown-ups or kids.
Sometimes it's harder to be a good winner than a good loser. I guess some Yankee fans don't know that. I don't hang out with them. In fact, most of my friends and family aren't Yankee fans. Keeps me humble, I guess.
One additional note. The only time I felt a sense of entitlement was the World Series of 2001. I didn't think the Yankees were entitled. I thought the city of New York was entitled to celebrate--something, anything. But the Yankees lost. C'est la vie.
I'm from a different era, too. The Yankees were great then. Though I didn't root for them, I watched all their games on TV because I loved baseball, and they were always on. Those were the Mantle, Berra, Ford years. There have been lean years since, and now fat ones.
Steinbrenner makes it easy to root against the Yankees. I know he plays by the rules, but baseball has got to do something to level the playing field, as it is in football and basketball. It's still possible to build a dynasty in those sports, but you can just buy a championship.
And I know other teams have tried to do it in baseball and failed or given up after one title. Only Steinbrenner has the resources to do it every years, and to raise the ante for any owner who tried to challenge him.
I somewhat agree with Roberta. But I also think a good razzing is not out of bounds, when you are talking to rational human beings who know that in the end, it's just a game.
It's those Yankee fans that get all obnoxious and yell and swear at Sox fans, or Sox fans who start fights with Yankees fans that are the problem. When a person is actually fighting over a baseball team that, in the end, is only there to entertain, that is when it becomes idiotic.
All the great dynastic teams have had those who love to hate them on one side and swaggering fans on the other. Goes with the territory.
You saw it with the Boston Celtics and the Montreal Canadiens in their heyday as well.
In the case of the Yankees, however it is magnified by the fact that the fallen empire rose from its ashes to plague the rest of us again. And again. Add to this that they are based in the city that the rest of the US loves to hate and owned by -- well, you know.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have this pinstriped voodoo doll I have to finish.
I love to hate the Cowboys. They were to me the world class swaggering bunch. Now they can't seem to win a game and I'm relenting somewhat. Pertaining to the Yankees - I live in Houston. How lonely can a fan get?
I don't see what the problem is ''''..... all we (Boston) have to do now is win four out the next five ..............
Right you are, Joe. And three of the four are home games. Piece a cake.
It will be a slam dunk (George Tenent).
I never write a team off this early.
I am starting a support group for Red Sox fans who are totally fatalistic.
Is that redundant?
I don't think so, Joe. If they were fatalistic, they probably wouldn't get so worked up.
Edgar~
Re: swagger
This is from Michael Holley's new book
Patriot Reign (actually Peter King discussing the book).
Quote:As the Patriots struggled trying to repeat as champs in 2002, he read in the paper one day that one of players said the team had to get its "swagger'' back. That day, in the team meeting, he said: "You know what? We didn't have a 'swagger' last year. What we had was a sense of urgency about playing well, being smart, and capitalizing on every opportunity and situation that came our way ... It wasn't about a f------- swagger. You can take that swagger and shove it right up your a--, OK?''
Right on, Bill.
how important is this series up heeyuh?
the patriots just set a new record with their 19th straight win, yet its nothing more than an afterthought buried in the sports section...
The sox are trying to overcome a century of futility...The Pats are arguably the Yankees of the NFL...if they win another Super Bowl I'll be on my knees chanting:"We're not worthy we're not worthy"

That is hyperbole. When they win about twenty five or so superbowls, then you can say something like this. Until then, they aren't even close. It's the most winning team in the history of all sports you're talking about here, remember.
