(Excerpted from "Cleaning the Pool: The White House Press Corps politely grabs its ankles", from www.nypress.com :

The Bush press conference to me was like a mini-Alamo for American journalism, a final announcement that the media no longer performs anything akin to a real function. Particularly revolting was the spectacle of the cream of the national press corps submitting politely to the indignity of obviously pre-screened questions, with Bush not even bothering to conceal that the affair was scripted.

Abandoning the time-honored pretense of spontaneity, Bush chose the order of questioners not by scanning the room and picking out raised hands, but by looking down and reading from a list. Reporters nonetheless raised their hands in between questions-- though hoping to suddenly catch the president's attention.

In other words, not only were reporters going out of their way to make sure their softballs were preapproved, but they even went so far as to pretend on Bush's behalf, raising their hands and jockeying in their seats in order to better give the appearance of a spontaneous news conference.

Even Bush couldn't ignore the absurdity of it all. In a remarkable exchange that somehow managed to avoid being commented upon in news accounts the next day, Bush chided CNN political correspondent John King when the latter overacted his part, too enthusiastically waving his hand when it apparently was, according to the script, his turn anyway.

KING: "Mr. President."

BUSH: "We'll be there in a minute. King, John King. This is a scripted..."

A ripple of nervous laughter shot through the East Room. Moments later, the camera angle of the conference shifted to a side shot, revealing a ring of potted plants around the presidential podium.

It would be hard to conjure an image that more perfectly describes American political journalism today: George Bush, surrounded by a row of potted plants, in turn surrounded by the White House press corps.

In my view, George Bush is becoming worse than Hitler was. He has absolutely NO regard for the ordinary citizen of this country. ALL he is interested in is furthering his and his rich buddies own personal interests. HIS war is just one example of this. Although most of the world is against his stupid actions here, there is still support among the American public. This is not surprising because we ALWAYS tend to support our president in times of crisis. However, Bush continues to threaten and set deadlines and NEVER follows up. I am sick of his brain damaged decisions and actions.

Now that the DOW is below 7500, I wonder if Bush will ever take notice of the financial damage he's doing to this country and the world. c.i.

I wonder what the historians will say about this president? That in two years, he trashed our economy, and created a world crisis? Or? c.i.

According to Donald Rumsfeld, the claim that G.W. has an autographed portait of Adolph Hitler on the wall of his bedroom in the White House and goes to bed humming "Anything you can do, I can do better" is a scurrilous rumour totally without foundation. Shocked

Howdy, Navy Vet and John Webb ... Welcome to both of you. Hope you like it here ... plenty of different forums, lots of neat bells and whistles ... just holler if you'd like help figuring stuff out around here. Down at the bottom of my posts are links to the FAQ page and The Help fForum ... good places to poke around.

Just a wild guess, here, but I wager you'll find kindred spirits ... particularly in the realm of ideology. I imagine you'll find plenty of debate, too. Twisted Evil

A more serious slightly-linked point. I have heard members of the armed services saying that, whatever their personal feelings about the justice of Bush's Iraq invasion or potential casualties, they would obey orders.

Attitudes seem to have changed since the end of WW2, when the Nazi excuse of "We were only obeying orders" was considered unacceptable by War Crimes Tribunals? Embarrassed

John Webb, I think the war may be Immoral from Bush and his administrations stand point (maybe even criminal) - but, I still see it as a just war from the soldiers stand point. Please don't forget that a soldier can only fight that part of the battle that is directly in front of him and can only refuse an order on the grounds of that order. He fights for himself and his men, they have to protect each other. Please, oh please do not turn against the soldier.

Thank you!!!!!!!

Few could turn against those who defend this nation. The dangers always arise when the least-fitted gain unlimited power over their actions.
