Timber
You are absolutely omniscient.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww... <schniff>
The weather here, although dry, is exceedingly sarcastic . . . be sure to button up your ironic overcoat . . .
Sarcastic???---damn did I miss something?
Hey Timber I sent you a PM----Is your inbox full again?
Just had an idea (rare, but it happens): to what extent is what we perceive as anti-Americanism simply the result of bad translation?
Anyone here remembers the late Chairman Mao calling us "capitalist running dogs"? Personally thought it hilarious, but might have been really, really, offended if I knew any Chinese.
This approach might also explain why the French are unfazed at being called in the Murdoch press "cheese-eating surrender monkeys"; I looked up the translation at Le Monde newspaper: "primates capitulards et toujours en quĂȘte de fromages" (primates who capitulate and who are forever in search of cheeses). Too sedate by half to insult even the most hotheaded.
P.S. to Setanta - so OK, I only now read your post inquiring if "demagoguery" is a word: it is not; the ancient Greek is "demagogy".
Bad translation? It does not seem to me to be the main reason for considering something being anti-American. When the enemies publicly burn U.S. flags and puppets in shape of Uncle Sam or actual President (anyone being in office at the moment of demonstration), maffick on the 09/11 anniversary, no translation is needed.
HoT
Hilarious! Funniest post I've read in a long while.
"anti-American"? Anyone who thinks Saddam has complied with UN requests to completely disarm and remove all weapons of mass destruction (biological, chemical and nuclear).
Tex
I think your described set has a membership of zero. And it isn't clear what might be the relationship between this hypothetical set and sentiments towards the US.
Blatham,
Although it is true enough that Tex didn't state the connection you cite, it isn't hard to see it. Why does his post require your correction?
Blatham, may I include you as a member of "the set" of those who don't believe that Saddam is in compliance with the U.N. resolution to completely disarm and remove all weapons of mass destruction? Does this new Hitler, Saddam, still have things to hide?
Saddam Hussein can't disarm because that is his bread and butter, his way to make MONEY. Maybe you are the one who is niiii eve.
Tex, I guess you haven't noticed, but Saddam's bread and butter is the "OIL." c.i.
Could be Saddam might like to be a world power, too? Why stop at oil?
World power? In what way? c.i.
Tex
Sadaam very likely is not in compliance with a resolution originating from the UN. But of course, we should probably note that that's true of Israel as well.
Does he want to make his country a power? Sure. So does Israel, so does the US.
I have no idea what you might allude to in suggesting the 'bread and butter' thing.
George...apparently I thought so.
I think other countries are also in defiance of UN Resolutions other than Iraq and Israel, although I'm not in a position to name them right now. Maybe, some A2Kers know which countries, and list them for us. c.i.
Blatham, Saddam Hussein needs money, he needs weapons if for no other reason than to prevent his own people from rising up against him. He murdered so many of them. He also supplies (sells, you know, his bread & butter) arms to the Taliban.
c.i. What did you ask? In what way does Saddam want to be a world power? Why, by keeping his biological and nuclear weapons hidden, selling them to any and everybody, especially terrorists who plan to kill Americans with them. You really do live in la-la land.
tex-star
Tex, If living in "la-la land" means I'm not afraid of Saddam taking over the world any time soon, then I'm in "la-la land." If you haven't noticed yet, the US and Brits have Saddam surrounded. Saddam's military is much deminished since 1991, smaller, and they're all demoralized. Your "fear" of Saddam is truly amazing - to me. c.i.
