So here we are in mid-August. We are up to I for Irene. Well off from Florida, but johnboy is watching it warily from his perch in central Virginia.
Irene is not a biggie and maybe it has started heading a bit to the east (ie out to sea). That would be fine.

Hey, John of Virginia. This will work:

Stompers; The Weavers;

Irene good night Irene good night
Good night Irene Good night Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Last Saturday night I got married
Me and my wife settled down
Now me and my wife have parted
I'm gonna take a little stroll downtown

Irene good night Irene good night
Good night Irene Good night Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Some times I live in the country
Some times I live in town
Some times I take a great notion
To jump in the river and drown

Irene good night Irene good night
Good night Irene Good night Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Quit your rambling quit your gambling
Stop staying out late at night
Stay home with your wife and family
And stay by the fireside of right

Irene good night Irene good night
Good night Irene Good night Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Irene good night Irene good night
Good night Irene Good night Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

Laughing

RJB: I've seen many a storm that was initially non-threatening, turn out to cause more damage than the threatening ones we worried about.

Be safe!

Headed out tomorrow morning for Topsail Island, NC.
I will be body surfing until things get ugly.
I hope to report back on Tuesday.

(I'm more afraid of sharks than 'canes.)

told yawl. Irene went bye bye and the song did the trick.

Hey, lion. Absolutely watch for them fins, and do NOT even think of body surfing on boogie boards if you see a cache of bait fish.

I don't know about you guys but I am all weathered out. We hard record rain fall, record heat waves, record muggy days and heaven only knows what else.

Glad Irene swept her sassy behind out to sea.

does every hurricane season seem longer than the one before?

i know that i heard an interview with a scientist who said it would be - but is it increasing at a pace that you're noticing it on the ground?

It sure does seem that way ehBeth. We are waiting nervously for what Poseidon has to offer NC this year.
Ususally we get action in Sept.

On that note, I'm back to the beach this weekend for a wedding, and as much bodysurfing as I can stand.

Yall take care down there Katrina looks pretty disorganized but she could pack a wallop (johnboy knew a girl once named Katrina...very disorganized but he learned to respect her sometimes erratic behavior). Please check in as soon as yall are able. Could be lots and lots of rain.

Never take them light. Hurricanes practically guarantee favorable conditions for tornados which are ALWAYS the biggest danger. While the Saffir-Simpson scale can cover storms of unbelievable size, the Fujita covers funnels who's intensity make even the worst Hurricane seem a mild breeze by comparison, if you're in the path of the business end. Er on the side of caution. That's some pretty warm water this time of year and it could fire that baby up a little. Best of luck friends.

Well, I'm getting rain and the sky is cloudy. Winds are straight out of the East, but not anything vicious, yet.

Panz, that map looks scary.

A year ago to he week and we are already up to the "K's". Were planning an end of summer boat trip out to Sable Island , so were gonna be out in the Atlantic starting mid next week. If it starts blowing up and veering up toward Nova Scotia. we will head in and ride it out. Sable Island Is not a place to be ina big wind. It was where the Tamaroa was almost swamped in the storms of "The Perfect Storm"

Quote:
Forecasters have predicted an unusually high number of storms this year because the Atlantic has swung into a multi-decade period of more intense storm activity.

The June-through-November Atlantic hurricane season has already seen 11 named storms, a record so early in the year. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects 18 to 21 tropical storms, with nine to 11 of them growing to hurricane strength.

The average is about 10 storms a year, with six growing into hurricanes.
