weve hauled our boat to the yard for another year and we may head back earlier than planned because I dont wanna ride into a storm driving . I heard that it could be in my home area by next Monday , whats lthe prediction for Fla?

One of the model tracks has it going up the coast and landfalling around the Chesapeake Bay. That would be horrible for us because , when I was in college i remember a hurricane AQGnes which flooded the entire Susquehanna basin and flooded entire cities on the river.
Good luck to all you Floridians.

We're hoping for the best! Things will change drastically in the next few days, so we're trying to stay grounded and stifle the panic!!!

A moment of levity before the winds pick up:

Hurricane Preparedness
Some important tips...............

Just info and tips to keep you safe in the storm...

Soon, you're going to turn on the TV and see a weather person pointing to
some spinning red thing headed toward our coast and making two basic
meteorological points:
(1) There is no need to panic.
(2) We could all be killed.

If you're new to the area, you're probably wondering what you need to do
to prepare for the possibility that we'll get hit by "the big one."

Follow this simple three-step hurricane preparedness plan:

STEP 1. Buy enough food and bottled water to last your family for at least
three days.

STEP 2. Put these supplies into your car.

STEP 3. Drive to Nebraska and remain there until Halloween.

HOMEOWNERS' INSURANCE:
If you own a home, you must have hurricane insurance. Fortunately, this
insurance is cheap and easy to get, as long as your home meets two basic
requirements:
(1) It is reasonably well-built, and
(2) It is located in Nebraska.

Unfortunately, if your home is located in Florida, most insurance
companies would prefer not to sell you hurricane insurance, because then
they might be required to pay YOU money, and that is certainly not why they
got into
the insurance business in the first place. So you'll have to scrounge around
for an insurance company, which will charge you an annual premium roughly
equal to the replacement value of your house. At any moment, this company
can drop you like a bad talk show host.

EVACUATION ROUTE:
If you live in a low-lying area, you should have an evacuation route
planned.. (To determine whether you live in a low-lying area, look at your
driver's license; if it says Florida, you live in a low-lying area.) The
purpose of having an evacuation route is to avoid being trapped in your
home when a major storm hits. Instead, you will be trapped in a gigantic
traffic jam several miles from your home, along with two hundred thousand
other evacuees. So, as a bonus, you will not be lonely.

HURRICANE SUPPLIES:
If you don't evacuate, you will need a lot of supplies. Florida tradition
requires that you wait until the last possible minute, then go to the
supermarket and get into vicious fights with strangers over who gets the
last can of SPAM.

In addition to food and water, you will need the following supplies:
23 Flashlights.

At least $167 worth of batteries that turn out, when the power goes off,
to be the wrong size for the flashlights.

Bleach. (No, I don't know what the bleach is for. NOBODY knows what the
bleach is for, but it's traditional, so GET some!)

A 55-gallon drum of underarm deodorant.

A big knife that you can strap to your leg. (This will be useless in a
hurricane, but it looks cool.)

And $35,000 in cash or diamonds so that, after the hurricane passes, you
can buy a generator from a man with no visible teeth.

Of course these are just basic precautions. As the hurricane draws near,
it is vitally important that you keep abreast of the situation by turning
on your television and watching TV reporters in rain slickers stand right
next to the ocean and tell you over and over how vitally important it is
for everybody to stay away from the ocean.

Thanks and good luck.

Last night went to Wally World for supplies and saw a line for the gas pumps...at midnight...haven't seen that before. There's a shared feeling I think that this one is serious.

We bought charcoal ,lighter fluid, plastic utensils and paper plates. The first aid kit was augmented with gauze bandages.

Today I have to tackle clearing out the sizable closet under the stairs. Mamma has designated it ground zero and 10 years of clothes and toys are going in the attic to make a safe room.

Oy! And just when we were beginning to relax. On the weather map, I am (on the Sun AM line) about 1" to the right, and about 1/2 " down from that line.

I'll be off to Publix to buy more "stuff". Evil or Very Mad

I am quite indecisive. Everyone is telling me to go and I am sitting here like a clod. I have a few obstacles to overcome like cars that aren't quite running as they should; Like a husband who is not quite running like he should; like Letty who is forever running. Rolling Eyes

Frances,
Get thee hence out ...out....out to the Atlantic.
Keep us sane and let's not panic.

Okay, so that little bit of doggerel is what the winds deserve.

Very Happy BD, I assure you that I will NOT go outside for that smoke. I'll do it right inside my home, the one privilege that I still retain for myself.

Love you all,
Letty

Obviously, folks in FL are weary after Charley but I hope they will also be wary of Frances. Maybe it will turn away but right now it doesn't look like it.
I'd certainly be tempted to adopt a cavalier attitude but sometimes discrection is the better part of valor. If I had room on my credit card and a car that ran reasonably well (or perhaps could rent a car or borrow one from a friend who wanted to get it out of harm's way), I might drive for a few hours NW to some Motel 6 along the interstate where I could get a room for not too much money. Sleep in a real bed rather than on a cot in a shelter, with a bathroom that I wouldn't be sharing with dozens of other folks. I reckon I would call it a forced vacation.
Our thoughts right now are with y'all in FL, but those of us in GA, SC, NC and VA are also watching with some anxiety. This could be bad.
Then again, it may blow away and we end up looking like a bunch of Chicken Littles. Hurricane season in the SE USA is always exciting.
Yall take care. -rjb-

Tomorrow morning mandatory evacuation of the barrier island(Hutchinson Island) begins. My elderly neighbors across the street will be moving to a shelter located in the local middle school.

Home Depot refused to sell any plywood except COD. How 'bout that?. No orders, no delivery.

Trying to get the roof finished on a new home but all day long the neighbors came by offering huge amounts of money for help with their shutters.

My sister called me just a moment ago. We ended up laughing about our youthful games, and our funny names.

Ya, know, folks, I never understood one game that we played: It didn't matter, because it was just the part of being young.

What happened to that little girl?

She's still here, inside me somewhere.

Hey, Johnboy--Let my big sis know that you know somebody who knows somebody Smile

Ah, I love to see a man blush.

Hey everyone ~

Mom, me, A#1 son and two cats will be hitting interstate 95 tomorrow and heading to my sister's house in NC ~ west NC.

Cocoa Beach is expected to have at least twenty inches of standing water throughout.....nevermind the high winds and potential damage from downed power lines, trees, fences, etc.

Providing we have phone service, we will try to keep in touch with everyone.....

Fingers crossed please!!!!! Rolling Eyes
