Your formulation is like an Ansel Adams photo (black and white) just not as pretty.

One merely has to read most any thread here or at any other such site. Lots of people do this - on both "sides".

David Weigel has a very smart column up right now at the Post which speaks quite precisely to this phenomenon. I hope everyone reads it http://wapo.st/1QNF7Ep

Most of us understand the influence of right wing talk radio and the unrestrained, personal-attack, slime-by-innuendo, hyperbolic and careless rhetorical styles that mark it. We understand too how people like Ann Coulter and Roger Ailes brought this model into television broadcasting and popular book publishing. We understand how these rhetorical styles have profoundly degraded our political discourse.

But as well, Weigel points to another phenomenon which has contributed to this degradation - shock-jock radio. And much of that arises from individuals who cannot be described as "conservative". Arguably, one can put Bill Maher in that category.

Note Weigel's bright take here on how these phenomena relate to the popularization of the term/concept of "political correctness".

It is obvious to anyone following your comments over the years...that you do not. So Hinge should not take that as a compliment.

on page 28, Robert wrote:
Right now each thread has one linear conversation in order of date. If two people decide to go off on a tangent, or start slinging mud it ruins the thread for all.

In the new system the comments will be threads. So instead of this:

- comment 1
- comment 2
- comment 3 (replying to the first one)
- comment 4
- comment 5

This linear order means that every comment can disrupt the thread.

It will be something like this:

- 1 reply to topic post
-- 2 reply to 1
---- 3 reply to 2
-- 4 reply to 1
- 5 reply to topic post
-- 6 reply to 5
-- 7 reply to 5
--- 8 reply to 7

The topics will each have multiple lines of conversation instead of one. And the ratings will put the conversations that members deem most valuable toward the top, meaning that a lot of the low-level discourse in the thread will be further down, and users can peruse the particular comments they want and can easily ignore tangents or two users who start slinging mud.

Edit: here are some screenshot examples, though the the interface we use will be different:

Sure, and that's why some of the changes simply need to be to allow for different lines of conversation to progress more easily. With one linear conversation toxic conversations ruin topics for everyone for example. Blocking too is something that will reduce the bickering in ways that no rule can as well.

I'm fine with the threads and blocking but keep my expectations low on their effect on toxicity levels. I trust human moderators more. They have a wider effect than meets the eye. As they say in chess, the threat is stronger than the execution. I mean that the threat of being banned from the site can have potent effects, even if very few people are actually banned. I also get that it's a bit like the nuclear option.

I think the mods should keep an eye on how newcomers are treated. They are often welcomed poorly.

I was about to point out that the site introduction blurb under "about us" was well worth updating but i see you're on it already. Me think we need something a bit funny and self-depreciating, while getting a shot at selling what you want to sell. I would say something of the long history of A2K, the original attempt at building a knowledge community, how it evolved into some sort of high-end forum, and mention a few typical thread subjects: the love sick asking for advice, philosophy and religion, world affairs and foreign policy, the word games, the occasional latin translations ... Also, in due time, a brief on the moderation policy and the basic tools to protect onself from "toxicity" (ignore, block).

Frank, CI wasn't commenting on Hingehead, he posted after BillRM because most of BillRM's sentences are missing verbs, get jumbled and are incoherent .
I remember to like to insult CI, but don't be quite so eager....if you ever read BillRM you would understand what a challenge it is.

@glitterbag,
Thank you, Glitterbag...but ci WAS making a remark about me with that post.

Follow it back...and you will see.

It was not a big thing...and my response was not over-the-top.

If Tak (not ci) ever comes to town again, I will greet him with the same sincere hug I greeted him last time he was here. But ci is going to continue to take shots at me here in the forum...and I expect he expects return fire. He is not anywhere near as nice as his real life partner, Tak.

Nope. I'd tie you up and ignore you and have endless Days of Our Lives, interspersed with Trump speeches on a tv in front of you.

Judging by some of the comments, it seems it's forgotten about as fast as it's posted.

@FBM,
FBM for president. I'm just saying.

Surely it can't hurt to share what you think would bring vitality to discussions.

Dennett says one should always pay attention when somebody starts a sentence with "surely." He says there's a good chance that what follows is a bald assertion and the weak point of the argument.
