@Ionus,
This is not a court of law and we do not need due process. For example we may have never stated a rule against someone hacking the site, but if someone tried you can bet they'll be banned.

Similarly, we may have never stated a rule such as that making a bunch of accounts to try to downvote someone is prohibited. But it's common ******* sense and we will get rid of people who behave that way regardless of whether there was a previous rule or warning.

@oralloy,
I too have a general preference for short suspensions and what you describe is typically how things have worked (a short suspension, and if the user returns doing the same a longer one).

We may disagree on the specific duration of what is short and long for various things but agree on the general principles of how suspensions should work.

@Ionus,
To vote down or up a post that you feel adds or does not add to the discussion would be the ideal. In reality most will use them to express agreement or disagreement with the substance or tone of a post.

What is not legitimate is:

- Engaging in mass downvoting of a user (e.g. trying to vote down all their posts even the ones that are innocuous just because you have a vendetta agains the member)
- Engaging in indiscriminate downvoting at high volume (an extreme example of this would be a member who decided to downvote every post on the site)

Upvotes are typically less prone to abuse but there are obvious cases of it as well such as making a dozen accounts to upvote yourself (this is currently blocked from happening most of the time but needs to get better).

I know you think the up and down voting is important, Robert. But, frankly, it is the least desirable facet of the site...and for some, apparently people with limited ego, it seems to be the focus of attention

You don't see much value in the voting right now because the voting right now does not provide much value. When it is used better than it is now it has much more value. With linear comments it doesn't do much, whoever posts the most (or posts last) gets the attention. With threaded comments it can sort the comments to put the best ones first. Some will disagree with this but it will ultimately result in a much more pleasant experience for all but the folks who are routinely providing what the community thinks are low value posts but who liked their ability to insert themselves into the monolithic linear conversation anyway.

@Robert Gentel,
re thumbs

Robert Gentel wrote:

without thumbs/likes etc, the alternative would be threads of agree/disagree comments. I guess threaded discussions can work that way.

I def would like an option to 'disappear' a comment as that's what I often use thumbs for - downthumbing 'agree' type comments (particularly in interesting discussions) so I'm left with only the actual discussion to read. Downthumbs are my default tidy-up function.

@ehBeth,
That's why the new system will have a way to collapse posts that is independent of voting.

Like most people (if they'd only admit it), I quite enjoy a good upthumbing now and then.

I may be using the "thumbs" button in an unintended way, but I use it in the "New Topics" window to filter out the posts I don't want to see. Mostly this is for Spammers but it also includes all the DeKryptonite posts and Relationship posts (because I'm just not interested). It has nothing to do with whether I feel the content is appropriate or not, it's merely a way to clean up the New Topics so that I only see the ones I am interested in.

That is what it is intended for. If you do not find it interesting you cast your vote for it not being interesting. Others can cast theirs. Then we can surface the more interesting stuff for others.

As such, I probably have hundreds of people on ignore simply because I thought they were Spammers or Bots. Only a very few are on ignore because I found them objectionable or boring.

There's nothing wrong with this for the site, but you may have to cull your list if there is a technical-based limitation placed on the amount of users you can block, and if so I think that the spammers (who the site should be removing for you) are going to be largely wasted slots on your list.

I'll adapt to whatever the new site provides. I'm not worried about that. I just wanted to expose the methodologies I use to interact with A2K in case it's of any value to you in designing the new system (knowing how a user uses the system).

@rosborne979,
Gotcha, I was just trying to make sure you understood that there is nothing objectionable that you are doing as described because others here seemed concerned (as is natural) that their use pattern might be what I'm talking about and I thought you were doing the same.

Time for a Christmas tale. Or perhaps i should say a Hanuka tale, given that it's Jewish... Whatever.

A Jewish Christmas Tale For A2Kers

Rabbi Haim of Romshishok, a Lituania itinerant preacher, used to say he was granted permission to visit both heaven and hell. With an angel at his side, the Rabbi was first ushered through the gates of Hell. Hell is beautiful, glorious scenery and palaces and all... Coming into one palace he sees row after row of tables laden with platters of sumptuous food; and people sitting around them.

Yet the people seated around the tables are pale and emaciated, moaning in hunger. Coming closer, the good rabbi sees that each person is holding a spoon, but that both his arms are splinted with wooden slats so that he cannot bend either elbow to bring the food to his mouth.

The angel then took the rabbi to Heaven, where he encountered the same beauty he had witnessed in Hell. Entering a dining hall there, he saw the exact same scene: people seated at the tables who had their arms splintered with wooden slates... But in contrast to Hell, they were all sitting contentedly, cheerfully talking with each other, as they enjoyed their sumptuous meal.

As the rabbi came closer, he was amazed to watch how each person at a table would feed the person sitting across from him. The recipient of this kindness would return the favor by leaning across the table to feed his benefactor.

The rabbi urged his angel to bring him back to Hell so he could share this solution with the poor souls trapped there. Racing into the dining hall, he shouted to the first starving man he saw, “You do not have to go hungry. Use your spoon to feed your neighbor, and he will surely return the favor and feed you.”

“‘You expect me to feed the detestable man sitting across the table?’ the man said angrily. ‘I would rather starve than give him the pleasure of eating!”

Then the rabbi understood: Heaven and Hell are the same place. The only difference is in the way people treat each other...

@Robert Gentel,
After reading through much of this thread and the complaints about what should and shouldn't be allowed, maybe you just need to announce you will be following NBA rules when it comes to suspensions.

No racist or homophobic rants or attacks on others. Sterling, Rajon Rondo as examples.

No going into the stands to fight.

2 flagrant fouls get you ejected.

You can say m----f---- all day and not worry about any consequences unless your mom sees it on TV.

@parados,
Dunno, IMO the level of discourse in the NBA (and most sports) is miles below ours here (though they have a better level of basketball going for them).

I don't know why so many people are complaining. If someone doesn't like the rules, they're free to seek out other sites. I've taken long breaks before. I survived. If I like the way things are working, I'll visit occasionally. If I don't, I can look elsewhere. There's a lot more to life than A2K.

@Wilso,
Change is hard to accept when we get old Wislo. Now I would like to see some change herein , but the kind that would add more "gadgety ****" that would, by itself, make this a "must visit" site.
1Foto hosting

2Foto editing on the hosting site

3an index

4. tools of a little more "out of the box"

5 app listings and reviews

Course , I hqve no idea what that would cost so I am probably tlking right outta my ass.

Merry Chrismas Wilso y'all be good in all the heat and stuff. Its supposed to be near 22 C here on Christmas. Hottest Christmas in years

We're having a cool one today. Yesterday, you could fry an egg on the hood of your car.

I assume the 22 is F? I've never experienced a temperature that low.
