The second amendment is there. Period. We have that to deal with that. But how?

You could try and implement it, ie enlisting all those who want to own a gun in a mandatory (and well organized) state militia.

Any member of such a militia would have the right to own and possess machine guns, grenades/grenade launchers, bazookas, and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. Sounds good to me.

But non-militia members would still have the right to carry handguns when they go about in public. Self defense is a right too.

@oralloy,
the "American way to keep crime at bay" doesnt seem to be working. Why arent we the safest country in the "civilized
world?

Those are the typical weapons of a modern militia.

A militia isn't about self defense against criminals. Militias are about being ready for serious combat.

You do know that the overall US crime rate as well as the homicide rate had been dropping for decades and happen to be at a near 100 years low?

@BillRM,
The crime rate has been dropping in almost every other country as well. Clearly guns isn't what is making the US safer and the US is not the safest country in the civilized world.

That's not how it works.

@parados,
Guns however is not making the US unsafe so get off the back of the legally owning firearms people and stop pretending that if firearms did not exist there would be less homicides including mass killings.

@oralloy,
I dont think the second amendment has anything to do with technology. Youre argument that an RPG or a stinger missile is a firearm as envisoned by the founders is kinda lame.
Why didnt they mention parrot guns or cannon?

Actually Madison had said that the "well armed militia" is the "Best way to protect a free country". He meant , the protection OF the Us govt, not protection AGAINST it.

Guns "are not"....

The facts of the per capita deaths by guns does not seem to back you up. You are only comparing the US stats against earlier US stats. When you compare the US to the rest of the civilized world , we are hopelessly mired in OVERKILL of our own citizens b y other citizens.

The Second Amendment was about ensuring that the militia would have access to the weapons that they would need in order to be effective.

Cannon were crew-served weapons. Militiamen only owned their own personal weapons.

No, it was about ensuring that the people would have access to arms. Though the militia is made of people, not all people are in the militia and ALL people have the right to bear arms.

There is a significant difference in the sort of weapons that people have the right to have however.

Non-militiamen have the right to have guns suitable for self defense.

Militiamen have the right to have shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.

@oralloy,
Standing military should have standing military weapons. No one else needs them. A rifle/shotgun/pistol is all the fire arm a citizen has the right to. I've seen some of our militias and they certainly do not need access to missiles of any sort.
