Previous page of this thread you replied to him twice. I must have missed the memo. FBM, did you keep a copy? Apologies for not keeping up.

Oh man, the irony is killer here.
Sorry, I didn't mean to **** in the party punch bowl. I thought you'd enjoy having a theist punching bag.

Not unless they ask. Wonder what they're afraid of?

@Leadfoot,
The atheist/theist interface doesn't have to be confrontational, you two.

... but if you're craving a fight, pick your adversaries with an eye to the chance that you might win.

@spikepipsqueak,
Not looking for mere confrontation, but I'm always up for a vigorous debate on theism vs atheism. But if they wish to be left alone I'd honor their choice.

Why that? Have you ever seen anyone change his/her mind as a result of discussing the issue?

It happens, but even if you were right and no one has, I'd want all to make a final decision after hearing both sides if they chose to.

@Leadfoot,
Never saw it happen. In my experience, these things (belief, unbelief) are like an epiphany: they dawn on you, or they don't.

If you Googled 'Atheists who became theists' I'm sure you would find an example.
The debate itself may not be responsible for the change, but it encourages more reflection which in turn can become that epiphany.

I'm sure the reverse is also true if you were to Google 'Theists who became atheists'.

@Leadfoot,
Of course many have moved from one view to another (sometimes several times). But not as a result of debates, in my experience.

Not to spoil anybody's fun but...

I can be an egotistical asshole at times, but I never fool myself into believing that my own experience reflects the full range of human experience. And I'm glad, that variety makes the world a more interesting place.

change that to theists who are no longer theists and you've got at least three people at Abuzz/A2k who had that experience, very much as a result of discussions back in 2004 - 2010. There may have been more, but I can only think of two others who have talked about it.

@Leadfoot,
I will warn you that my experience is that these discussions have so far led away from theism, not toward it - so continue with the realization that your attempt to argue for theism may take other people away from belief.

Belief doesn't hold up well when it comes to evidence-based debate.

this isn't really the thread for that

___

it will be interesting to see if atheists are ever allowed to have a thread that isn't over-run with people trying to argue with them

it's never gone well at A2k
