We need both liberals and conservatives. IMHO, there are two main political motivations: to be FAIR, and to be FREE to do as you please. FAIRNESS and FREEDOM are both desirable, but most of the time increasing one diminishes the other.

in general,
Liberals are the champions of FAIRNESS
Conservatives are the champions of FREEDOM

Rather ironic, old horse . . . the term liberal is from liberalis, meaning the state of being a freed man.

Conservatives are the champions of freedom. Equus, you should try out for Chris Rock's job as funniest man in America.

The word freedom has been so warped by political rhetoric that I don't even know the meaning of the word. Apparently, it involves the bombing of non-threatening nations and the imposition of undemocratic puppet governments. Also, french fries.

Indeedydo . . . as i read it (and can't provide a citation, it was in print more than 30 years ago, and not on-line) the term specifically referred to a member of the order of Plebs in Rome who had been enslaved for debt, and had attained his freedom.

Freedom's just another word
For nothin' left to lose
Nothin' ain't worth nothin'
But it's free . . .

Champions of freedom? You're kidding, right? Ever hear of the Patriot Act? How about statements against homosexual marriage? How about a ban on abortions? How about restrictions on cell research? Can you think of anything else?

I think the difference between some conservatives and some liberals and all other classified groups of people is that some conservatives don' t have an ounce of fair play and honor.

Justices Scalia and Rehnquist bemoan the fact that Conservatists are not for "Freedom". The only freedom they are for is the 2nd amendment!

It is funny that there is such talk that the Middle East needs to be liberalized. And, in times past it was pointed out that a person was good because they were of liberal views.....

That man was one heck of a general, it is certain. But even so, he wasn't a good enough model for Ralph Reed and Grover Norquist who thought Patton the figure who had it right. Although Norquist also gave a worshipful nod to Stalin... "He was running the personnel department while Trotsky was fighting the White Army. When push came to shove for control of the Soviet Union, Stalin won...He understood that personnel is policy."

This was the late seventies when they were getting rid of moderates (traditional republicans) and taking control of the College Republicans under the tutelage of Jack Abramoff who said many things but one thing I'll note here is..."It is not our job to seek peaceful co-existence with the Left. Our job is to remove them from power permanently."

It has also been said that Iraq is being made more liberal, not more conservative. Saddam has been described as an arch conservative.....

Iraq is to be liberated - not conservatated Surprised

The root word of liberal is liberty.

The root word of democrate is democracy. We are bringing democracy to the middle east, not republicanism Shocked
