I've now spent over one week in the hospital after returning from my trip to Spain and Portugal on Christmas Eve. On the 28th, I had no energy or appetite, and spent the next week in bed - thinking I had the flu. Unfortunately, it was the beginning of medical problems that I would never have imagined or possible. My kidney completely shut down, but fortunately, the doctors, specialists, techs, RN's and all the stall gave me their all at our Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara (one block from our home) - and I really mean 100%.
To make a very long stretch of so many different experiences would fill reams of unnecessary cyberspace, but the best of what I can say today is that after going through medical hell, I'm now in pretty good spirit knowing I have my family and friends, and that the medical profession - at least around here - is first class who have devoted every effort to assist me where ever needed. I can't begin to even list all the professional staff that have dedicated themselves for my good health, and all the prognosis all looks positive.
All I wish to do here is to let all of my friends know that I cherish all the life experiences we have shared over these many years in many of the major cities
where a2k members work and live. I will write again in a few days: I've really had no rest for the past ten days, and this is my first attempt after spending all this time in bed.
Thanks for your friendships.
Tak
@cicerone imposter,
I know I'm not one of those long-term A2K friends, but I wish you the best, anyway. Glad to hear that you're getting top-notch attention.
Tak -
I had been wondering about you. I appreciate your keeping us informed. It is great to know you had first class care and have a positive prognosis. My best wishes go out to to you and I hope we hear from you again real soon.
geez, ci, so sorry to hear it, and hope you're feeling better and come back to us hale and hearty as soon as possible. You've fought the good fight here for years, and faced up to a lot of slagging from some of the resident troglodytes and I admire you for it. And I admire your reminders of the crap this country pulled on its Japanese-American citizens in WWII.
Kidneys are a bitch. I had kidney stones a couple years ago, and the pain was awful. Hope yours weren't as painful. One thing I took from it was that ibuprofen (which appears under several different trade names which I can never remember) suppresses kiidney function (as well as relieves pain). I'd been taking it because of a rotator cuff injurt, and it probably spurred the stones. Double check if anyone prescribes it for you.
Best of luck, recuperate, and give us progress reports.
@cicerone imposter,
Did you have just one functioning kidney (you said your kidney shut down).
Are you on dialysis now?
I guess you're on a kidney transplant list?
A blood family member could be a good match.
@cicerone imposter,
Oy Tak, that didn't sound good - kidneys shutting down is severe. I hope you're on the mend now and please stay at home and rest up. You've seen the world three times over already, now stay put and heal.
I hope you're feeling better soon!
@CalamityJane,
Prognosis? Really sorry to hear this. Can we expect a full recovery?
@cicerone imposter,
Glad you are in good hands there. Thank you for sharing yourself with us and hoping the best for you.
Tak, sorry you've had such a struggle since returning from your latest adventure abroad. It sounds like you are feeling a bit more comfortable now and strong enough to take the time to let us know what is going on.
You are in one of the best areas of the country for the medical care you need. Kaiser Santa Clara is up there with the best.
Mom sends her regards. Please let your wife and family know we are here for them should they also need a few doses of the A2K good vibes network.
Get better, buddy. You are expected to be the tour guide at the next Bay Area Gather.
@Butrflynet,
Tak, I hope to hear better and better news re: your ongoing treatment, because I always look forward hearing of your adventures.
Sounds like your going through this in your typical "no-bullshit" way, that shows through.
Keep peeing
V
@cicerone imposter,
I know it's small comfort, but at least you weren't in hospital on Christmas Day. Keep smiling, it's all you can do, and make a speedy recovery.
@cicerone imposter,
I wondered where you were.
I hope everything turns out ok, and I hope its not long before you are back to argue with me...lol
Take care of yourself, and know that all of your friends are pulling for you to get better as fast as possible.
We look forward to your return, and send prayers to the gods for your recovery.
Rest and get well...then stay well.

Oh, that was hard to read.
I hope that this is the end of the medical issues, at least the major ones and I truly.. truly hope you are comfortable and happy at this point. I want to say so much more, but I think that sums it up rather well.
Much love to you Tak.
Sorry to hear of your illness. Glad you've been taking care of so well by the medical community. Are you going to sue Spain for damages? Seriously though, I hope your recovery is 100% and you get all your energy back. Eventually I'd love to see pics of Spain and Portugal when you're up for that.
Give them hell.
@cicerone imposter,
Well sheesh. I was hoping for the next travel review.
I'm glad to hear you've had the best medical care and that you're now ready to rest and put your recovery into high gear.
All the very best to you and your family.
Beth
@cicerone imposter,
Wow, CI. I had no idea you were having medical issues. But I'm glad to hear you're doing better now and hopefully on the road to recovery. Was this due to something you contracted during your travels, or is it entirely unrelated?
Wishing you the best,
Healing thoughts for you and your family.
